Opportunities are available to help fund your Heritage and Museum Sciences master's degree, inlcuding working in the Museum.

More than 90 percent of Heritage and Museum Sciences graduate students receive financial aid through scholarships, fellowships, and/or employment in the Museum through the Heritage and Museum Sciences apprenticeship program.

Scholarships

Scholarships (generally $1,000) are available for full-time students based on scholastic achievement. Awarded on an annual basis, scholarships are renewable up to two additional years (total 3 years). The scholarship provides a waiver of out-of-state tuition rates and assesses tuition at the in-state rate for the academic year. Students must have a GPA of 3.0 or better for the initial award and a GPA of 3.5 or better for renewal awards. Scholarships may be awarded up to the beginning of the semester.

Graduate Recruitment Fellowships

This competitive fellowship is available for full-time students based on scholastic achievement (GPA of 3.0 or better). The annual award of $4,000 is renewable for a second year provided a student remains in good standing with a GPA of 3.0 or better. While the Graduate School provides Heritage and Museum Sciences an allocation of fellowships (number varies from year to year), Heritage and Museum Sciences has the authority to make the awards. The Graduate School requires recipients to attend three professional/academic program for each award year and apply through the Graduate School for external funding for each award year. The fellowship provides a waiver of out-of-state tuition rates and assesses tuition at the in-state rate for the academic year. Recipients must be enrolled full-time (9 hours/semester). Graduate Recruitment Fellowships are awarded only for Fall semester entry into the program. First year fellowship awards are made by March 15. Plan your application submittal accordingly.

Helen DeVitt Jones Fellowship in Museum Science and Heritage Management

This competitive fellowship is available for full-time students based on scholastic achievement (GPA of 3.5 or better). The annual award of $6,000 is renewable for two additional years (total 3 years) provided a student remains in good standing with a GPA of 3.5 or better. Recipients are required to enroll in a service learning course (usually Heritage Education) and participate in community service of 40 hours volunteer work at a Lubbock area museum or heritage facility. The fellowship provides a waiver of out-of-state tuition rates and assesses tuition at the in-state rate for the academic year. Helen Devitt Jones Fellowships are awarded for Fall semester entry into the program (three awards) and for Spring semester entry into the program (one award).

Heritage and Museum Sciences Apprenticeship Program

Heritage and Museum Sciences invests in its students and the apprenticeship program is a major way students are integrated into the Museum. Employment in the Museum complex (Museum, Natural Science Research Lab, Lubbock Lake Landmark) is an important, experiential part of the curriculum. The apprenticeship program is based on a mutually beneficial approach to provide hands-on experience within an AAM-accredited museum. Graduate students work in such areas as curatorial, exhibits, education, heritage, or administration. The minimum employment is 15 hours/week and first year student assignments are for a minimum two semesters in a particular division.

Research Assistantships

Research assistantships occasionally become available to Heritage and Museum Sciences graduate students through grants to Museum faculty and staff. Research assistants must be enrolled full-time (9 hours/semester). A research assistant works 20 hours/week and is paid monthly. Salary may vary between research assistantships based on grant or award funds. Research assistantships provide a waiver of out-of-state tuition rates, reduced tuition and fees (approximate two-thirds reduction), and University benefits.

Teaching Assistantships

Teaching assistantships are available to Heritage and Museum Sciences graduate students in the Fall semester only. Teaching assistants must be enrolled full-time (9 hours/semester). A teaching assistant works 20 hours/week and is paid monthly. Teaching assistantships provide a waiver of out-of-state tuition rates, reduced tuition and fees (approximate two-thirds reduction), and University benefits.
