The Museum of Texas Tech's Artist Printmaker/Photographer Research Collection has a collection of 59 original works of art by Ruiz.

"Ruiz's artwork is rooted in drawing that engages oral traditions and curanderismo, Mexican faith healing. Through storytelling and exploration of superstitions, Ricardo reflects on the everyday and healing in the 21st century. His images depict mythic figures grounded in personal memoirs, rituals, and prose. The work expands on the traumas and histories of marginalized groups in North America and provides a point of healing through spiritual reconciliation and mediation.

The artist notes that he makes work with the intention of fostering community through sharing personal experiences among individuals and removing barriers "built through a history of discrimination and subversive socio-political tactics."
