Andrew George
Dr.
Andrew George is Director of Orchestras and Associate Professor
of Conducting at Texas Tech University, where he conducts the
University Symphony Orchestra, University Opera productions, and
teaches graduate courses in orchestral conducting. Prior to his
current position, Dr. George spent four yeas as Associate
Director of Orchestras at the University of Michigan, where he
conducted the University Philharmonia Orchestra, the
Contemporary Directions Ensemble, University Opera productions,
and taught courses in orchestral conducting.
Dr. George is equally at home with
professional, university, and youth ensembles, with numerous
appearances throughout the US and abroad. He recently appeared
as conductor of the All-Northwest Orchestra, an ensemble
comprised of the top all-state musicians from the six states in
the MENC Northwest Division. Recent international guest
conducting engagements include the National Symphony Orchestra
of Honduras, National Conservatory Orchestra of Honduras,
Bicentennial Youth Orchestra of Curanilahue, Chile, and an
invitation from the Hong Kong government to conduct their Summer
Youth Orchestra. Dr. George appeared as guest conductor with the
Columbus Symphony, BalletMet of Columbus, Toledo Symphony,
Madison Symphony Orchestra, Edgewood Chamber Symphony, Wisconsin
Middle-level All State Orchestra, Vermont All-State Orchestra,
Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra, Wisconsin Summer Music
Clinic Honors Orchestra, and the Hong Kong Lui Ming Choi Youth
Orchestra. He also served as Principal Conductor of the
Composers Alliance Orchestra and Kanopy Dance Company.
Additional appointments included Assistant Conductor for a
recording on the Naxos label with the BBC Singers and orchestra
in London, Assistant Conductor for Union Opera, and Cover
Conductor for the Madison Symphony Orchestra. George appears on
the CD Porter Ambrose King, released on Boston Records. Dr.
George has collaborated with many of today's significant living
composers, including John Corgliano, Osvaldo Golijov, Karen
Tanaka, William Bolcolm, David Schiff, Betsy Jolas, Peter
Fischer, Robert Beaser, Michael Colgrass, Evan Chambers, David
Lang, and Michael Daugherty.
An active clinician and teacher, Dr. George
has taught conducting at the Conductors Guild Workshop, American
String Workshop, and the Conductors Retreat at Medomak. He has
appeared as guest clinician in many states throughout the
country, in addition to presenting at the Michigan Music
Educator's Conference, Wisconsin State Music Conference, Texas
Music Educators Conference, and at Oxford University, England.
Prior to his appointment at the University of Michigan, Dr.
George was Director of Orchestral Activities at Ohio University.
Dr. George received his Bachelor of Music degree in Music
Education from the University of Michigan, his Master of Music
in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Wisconsin, and
his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Orchestral Conducting from the
University of Michigan. Prior to his Doctoral Studies, George
taught orchestra and strings in the Madison (WI) Public Schools
for seven years. His conducting teachers include Kenneth
Kiesler, David Becker, James Smith, Marvin Rabin, Martin Katz,
Donald Schleicher, Louis Bergonzi, and H. Robert Reynolds, and
has had additional conducting training at workshops with Gustav
Meier, David Loebel, and Michael Tilson Thomas.
