Texas Tech University Choir performing at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles, California
As Director of Choral Studies, it is my privilege to recommend one of the truly outstanding
choral/vocal programs in this country. Featuring a remarkably gifted faculty of
internationally accomplished singers, conductors and music educators, the Texas Tech
University choral program offers six uniquely crafted ensembles – each possessing its
own distinct mission.
Our critically acclaimed University Choir enjoys national and international tours. Summer
2007 saw the Choir return to England for the third annual St. John's College, Cambridge
/Texas Tech Summer Choral Institute. In January 2007, the Choir joined Craig Johnson and
Conspirare for the National Endowment of the Arts American Masterpieces Music Festival.
Other highly acclaimed invitational performances before the American Choral Directors
Association 2005 National Convention in Los Angeles, as well as the Texas Music Educators
Association conference, regional ACDA conventions, and the Association of British Choral
Directors national conference in York, England attest to the excellence of this world-class
choir. A highly select Women's Chorale and Men's Chorus, a second mixed chorus, as well as
the popular Madrigal Singers and Lubbock Chorale community chorus complete our array of
great choral ensembles.
Annual choral events include the consistently "sold out" Madrigal Scholarship Dinner
(now in its 31st season); Carol of Lights Christmas Concert for Choirs and Brass; and
the Scholarship Concert (masterworks performance with Texas Tech choirs and orchestra).
Extensive performance opportunities for both singers and conductors are afforded by our
large graduate choral conducting program as well as the cooperative and integrative
relationships between the vocal, choral, and opera departments. These efforts toward a
holistic vocal division have placed our choral organizations, vocal studio teaching, and
musical theater and opera program among the elite collegiate vocal programs in the U.S.
At Texas Tech, we are a family of teachers and students who challenge each other at the
highest levels of musical excellence while maintaining a wonderful sense of community.
The training of future choral music educators as well as singers anticipating a professional
career on the stage is our top priority. We believe that singers with a passion and vision
can discover a stimulating and supportive community of musicians, where excellence and
education unite in a common purpose.
John Dickson,
Director of Choral Studies
