The Texas Tech University Choir has been selected, by audition, to perform
before the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) annual conference in
San Antonio, TX, February 13-16, 2008. This is a distinct honor for the
University Choir to be chosen from a distinguished list of Texas university choirs.
TMEA is the prestigious state music educators' organization that meets annually
in San Antonio. With several thousand secondary school music educators and
student musicians in attendance, an invitational concert for this venue is a
wonderful opportunity to showcase the outstanding vocal talent and choral
program at Texas Tech University.
Following an inspirational Fall choral workshop with internationally renown
composer Stephen Paulus, the Choir eagerly anticipates performing Dr. Paulus'
Poemas de Amor as part of our concert program.

A Textual Approach to Tonal Integrity
John Dickson, clinician

| Date: |

| Time: |
2:00pm |
| Location: |
CC 101 |
Description of Interest Session:
Robert Shaw said, "There is no such thing as beauty of tone -- only dramatic integrity of tone."
A text inspires the music and thus dictates the tone. The Texas Tech University Choir will
demonstrate how involvement in the text allows textual understanding and expression to come
alive with the music? The interpretive level of good diction moves beyond pronunciation to
a sensitivity of language in which words possess their own innate shape and expression. This
attention to the expressivity of language shapes the choral tone, molds musical phrase, and
creates an aesthetic union of words and music.
It is indeed a rare occasion when a collegiate choir receives three opportunities to perform
before the TMEA conference. I know you will join me in congratulating our Texas Tech singers
for these well-earned invitations.
