Jack Unzicker has performed as Principal Double Bass of the Lubbock Symphony,
AIMS Festival Orchestra (Graz, Austria), Plano Symphony, Dallas Chamber Orchestra,
and Orquestra Divertimento (Costa Rica). He has also performed with the Dallas
Opera, Fort Worth, Shreveport, Richardson, East Texas, and Abilene Symphony Orchestras.
He has performed solo and chamber music recitals in Alaska, California, North Carolina,
Texas, Virginia, Washington, Austria, Germany, and as a member of the innovative bass
quartet Downright Upright at the International Society of Bassists and American String
Teachers Association Conventions.
Prior to his appointment at Texas Tech University, where he teaches private lessons,
double bass orchestral repertoire, audition preparation, solo masterclasses, and
technique class, Unzicker taught at The University of Texas at Arlington, Tarleton
State University, Texas Woman’s University, the Jeff Bradetich Double Bass Summer
Camps, and as a Graduate Teaching Fellow at the University of North Texas. In 2005,
he created the Jack Unzicker Double Bass Workshop, a series of master classes, private
lessons, solo, chamber music, and jazz recitals in his hometown of Juneau, Alaska.
Unzicker received his Master of Music Degree in double bass performance and jazz studies,
as well as the Outstanding Graduate Student in Strings Award from the University of North
Texas, where he is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Musical Arts Degree in double bass
performance and orchestral conducting. He received his Bachelor of Music Degree in jazz
studies, magna cum laude, and the College of Music Outstanding Graduate Award from Western
Washington University. Additionally he has studied at the Pierre Monteux School and the
Henry Mancini Institute. His teachers include Jeff Bradetich, William Clay, Lynn Seaton,
Anna Doak, and Chuck Israels.
