University Symphony Orchestra and University String Orchestra
The University Symphony Orchestra is one of the major ensembles at Texas Tech. This 80 member ensemble has earned great public acclaim for its performances on campus, during its annual tour, and at national conferences. At least seven major concerts or events are scheduled throughout the year, with a comprehensive repertoire of works from the 18th-21st centuries, including collaborations with guest composers, the University Choirs and Lubbock Chorale, opera department, and with our annual Student Soloist Competition winners. Members regularly perform with the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra and are in high demand as leading members of other regional orchestras. Rehearsals occur MWF from 1:00p.m.-2:50p.m. at the School of Music. For more information about this ensemble please contact Professor David E. Becker at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Auditions are open to all qualified Texas Tech University students and are held at the beginning of the fall term in August. Click here to go to the audition information page. Woodwind, brass, and percussion performers are advised to visit the Bands information page at this link for their audition information. String Players can audition for 2nd (Spring) semester, and there may be additional positions available for winds in the 2nd semester.
The University String Orchestra is designed for non-music majors, string education majors on a secondary instrument, and community members. This ensemble provides an opportunity to both maintain and improve skills playing a wide variety of music with limited weekly time commitments. Offering one (1) performance credit per semester, the course is a performing ensemble and is not an introductory instruction class for playing the instrument. Private instruction at any level is encouraged at TTU with faculty and music majors.
Musicians are expected to attend all rehearsals and practice their parts for the assigned repertoire before each rehearsal. The conducting staff very much respects the time limitations of the students, but attendance and appropriate preparation are required to maintain quality standards and a positive performing experience in the University String Orchestra.
Rehearsals occur on Thursdays from 7:00p.m. to 9:00p.m. in room 011 at the School of Music, with one performance each semester. This course satisfies the visual and performing arts credit requirements and is available for both undergraduate and graduate credit. A limited number of instruments are available for use by those who don't own one. To check availability, send an email to email@example.com.

After this rehearsal, students can sign up for an audition. If you miss the first meeting, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange an audition time. Students who were in the ensemble during the Fall 2016 semester do not need to re-audition for the Spring 2017 semester.
