Taking Dual-Credit Courses and Preparing for College
Texas Success Initiative Compliance
Under the Texas Success Initiative (TSI), you must either be exempt or take a TSI Approved test such as
the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA), the Compass, Accuplacer, or Asset Examination to test for basic skills in the areas of reading, math and writing. For specific information on TSI exemptions,
visit TSI . Students who take a TSI test yet fail one or more portions of a TSI test must see a TSI advisor in the TSI Skills Development Office prior to meeting with their regular advisor. For more information on TSI Skills Development, visit TSI Skills Development Office.
TEXAS SUCCESS INITIATIVE SKILLS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
The TSI Skills Development Program seeks to improve student readiness for successful completion of college-level work. The state of Texas and TTU regulations require all students who fail one or more portions of a TSI test to enroll for development courses in the area(s) of deficiency and follow the mandatory attendance rules. Failure to meet these regulations will result in the student's withdrawal from the university. For more information on TSI Skills Development, visit TSI Skills Development Office.
ACT and SATIf you have at least 12 high school credits, you should prepare to take the SAT or ACT. Visit collegeboard.com to register for the SAT or ACT.org to register for the ACT. Complete either form using the TTUISD High School code-444357. ACT/SAT scores sent to Texas Tech University do not come to the offices of TTUISD.
PSAT
If you have six high school credits, the PSAT National Merit Qualifying Test can be taken for practice each October. To qualify for a spot as a National Merit finalist and a possible scholarship, you must be classified as a high school junior (approximately 14 credits). To participate in this test, contact a counselor in one of your local high schools for further information and registration materials. Complete the registration form using the TTUISD High School code-444357. If you need help in preparing for the PSAT, check bookstores in your area for a study guide.
