Texas Tech University :: College of Outreach & Distance Education
Grade Level Requirements
Texas Tech University Elementary School
CURRICULUM DESIGN
Courses are designed for parents or tutors working with elementary students in a home environment. Our comprehensive, easy-to-follow lesson plans are written by experienced, Texas-certified classroom teachers and do not require a teaching background to use. The comprehensive course guides include clearly written daily lessons in language arts (reading, grammar, composition, spelling/phonics and handwriting), math, science and social studies, as well as worksheets, answer keys, and tests to accompany the lessons. Lessons are written to appeal to students with different learning styles and include application activities that emphasize higher-level thinking skills. Optional Internet activities are included in many lessons to encourage students to use computers to gather and interpret information. All of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) are addressed in each of the courses.

The elementary curriculum focuses on four disciplines: language arts, science, social studies and math. Each course consists of two semesters. Each semester course offers 75 days of instruction and may be purchased as a grade-level set or as a combination of grade-level courses to accommodate the needs of multi-level students. The CODE Bookstore will stock only the textbooks that are required for the elementary courses; the remainder of the books may be found in your public library, at local bookstores or online. Given that publishers often change versions and ISBNs for textbooks, we recommend that you purchase all required elementary textbooks from the CODE Bookstore. A list of these books is available under the individual course descriptions.

ASSESSMENT
Students enrolled in TTUISD Elementary School will be required to complete and submit written assessments (unit tests) and projects at the conclusion of each unit. There are three units in each semester. All unit tests and project ideas are included in the comprehensive lesson plan with the exception of the Unit Six test, which is sent to an approved proctor who will monitor only the Unit Six test. The Unit Six test is not a comprehensive final; it is a test over the information that is required in the Unit Six curriculum studies. Students submit written assessments and projects through the mail. They are evaluated and graded by an experienced, Texas-certified elementary teacher and returned to the student; the grades are recorded at TTUISD. The student must pass the Unit Six test to pass the course. At the end of each semester, students receive a semester report card. The second semester report card will include the yearly average. The semester one and semester two grades will be averaged to determine promotion status to the next grade level. Students must pass each course with at least 70 percent mastery in order to progress to the next grade level.

These are college-level courses taught by Texas Tech University faculty. You will be expected to perform at the University level. Texas Tech University requires the student either to pass the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) test or be exempt from the test as a result of SAT, ACT, or TAKS test scores before enrolling in a dual-credit course. All finals must be proctored at a college or university testing center. TTUISD students will receive TTUISD honors credit for these courses. Other Texas Tech University courses can be taken for dual-credit if they are approved by TTUISD counselors in advance. If you are a TTUISD student, you must be enrolled full-time in TTUISD in order to take dual-credit courses.
