Wind Power System Short Course to be Offered Summer 2009

LUBBOCK – The College of Outreach and Distance Education in partnership with the Wind Science and Engineering Research Center at Texas Tech University will be holding an Introduction to Wind Power Systems: Technology and Economics short course on June 2-4. The course will be held at the College of Outreach and Distance Education building located on the Texas Tech University campus in Lubbock.
The short course is designed to provide an overview of current wind power technology, from its technical aspects to operational, geographic and economic issues. Course attendees will learn about the architecture, design, configuration, operation, site placement and economics of wind turbines, wind farms, and wind-driven power plants. The course will also provide an understanding of wind energy as it relates to the electricity utility industry.
Some of the specific course topics that will be discussed include:
• Wind characteristics and measurement
• Conversion of wind energy to electricity
• Wind turbine architecture and technology
• Economics of wind energy
• Other wind energy applications
The course faculty includes, Dr. Jamie Chapman, senior research faculty member in Wind Science and Engineering at Texas Tech, and Dr. Andrew Swift, director of the Wind Science and Engineering Research Center at Texas Tech.
