This intensive, advanced level nonprofit management institute is specifically designed for executive leaders of nonprofit agencies. The program consists of nine consecutive sessions that will provide you with the knowledge and
skills for strengthening your organization in today's volatile and competitive environment and leading it successfully into the future. Sessions are held on five consecutive Fridays, starting May 30th, from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Outreach and Distance Education building on 9th Street and Indiana Ave. A special
two-hour session on "Tax Updates for Exempt Organizations" is scheduled for Thursday, June 19, from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.Friday, May 30th

Learn to translate your organization's mission and goals into organizational performance. This session will address issues of effective organization and human resource management. The approach will be practical with some consideration of regulatory issues. You will learn how to analyze and develop solutions to performance issues, identify factors that influence communication effectiveness, address the challenges of organizational change, and enhance organizational performance through positive employee relations. You will also understand the importance of making job-relevant decisions for effective and defensible human resource management and recognize the implications of law and regulations for human resource decisions.

Strategic Planning: Putting the Strategy back into your Strategic Plan
Your strategic plan is your organization's compass, and proper navigation ensures that you reach your destination safely and successfully. After a review of standard terminology and procedures for strategic planning, you will learn techniques for evaluating your existing strategic plan, organizational vision, mission statements and strategies. You will then develop techniques for leading your organization in developing a strategic vision and linking your strategic plan to your available resources. You will also receive practical solutions for effective implementation and assessment of your strategic plan.

Tax Update for Exempt Organizations
Exempt organizations are facing an ever increasing scrutiny of IRS enforcement efforts as well as more emphasis on governance and internal control environments due to a more heightened public awareness. Learn more about IRS enforcement methods and future targets as well as the need for establishing appropriate governance policies and best practices. The IRS has released a draft version of Form 990 that is expected to be effective for the 2008 year-end. Early
planning and education will be essential for future compliance.

Development and Evaluation
Your programs and services to the community are the most critical part of your organization, and a careful planning and evaluation process lays the groundwork for
their success. This session will take you through the steps of developing successful programs or services that meet the needs of your constituents while providing valuable data to you, your board and your funders. You will learn how to conduct effective needs assessments, identify gaps in programs or services, and how to plan the program. You will discuss why program evaluation is necessary and review the United Way of America model of outcomes measurement. You will also learn how to define, choose, and measure outcomes; and how to collect, analyze and report data.

Fiduciary Investing for Nonprofit Fiduciaries
Nonprofit leaders often manage significant investment portfolios for their organization, while their fiduciary responsibilities associated with that role remain vague. Learn to become a responsible manager and fiduciary with regards to your organization’s investment assets. You will review the history of the fiduciary standards applied to investment management and the current laws governing the nonprofit universe. Building on that background, you will be introduced to the fundamental academic concepts underlying modern investment practices, including the work of Nobel Laureates William Sharpe, Harry Markowitz and Danny Kahneman. You
will then discuss how these concepts are applied to the real world of daily nonprofit investment portfolio management.

Government Relations and Advocacy: Impacting
Public Policy
All too often, we find out about changes in legislation that affect us after the fact. We wonder how something like that could have passed and are frustrated by what it means to our organization and our clients. In this session, you will learn how you and your nonprofit organization can impact public policy at the local and state levels, and create or change policy to better serve you and your constituents’ needs. Topics to be covered include: the legislative process, becoming an effective advocate, reasons why nonprofit professionals should be involved in public policy formulation, ways to stay informed about issues and topics of concern, communicating with elected officials, your constituency and the news media, and lobbying.

About the Presenters
Harold Evensky is a Certified Financial Planner, an Accredited Investment Fiduciary, and President of Evenksy & Katz, an investment firm. He recently also joined the faculty of Texas Tech’s Division of Personal Financial Planning. Harold has published numerous books and articles, and is frequently quoted in financial trade publications, newspapers, internet articles and magazines. He has been recognized by Financial Planning Magazine, Accounting Today, Worth Magazine and the Journal of Financial Planning for his contributions to the field of accounting, investing and financial planning. Amy Fox is Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations at the Texas Tech University System. She has over 25 years of experience in fundraising, major gifts, grantwriting, annual giving, special events, and management of nonprofit organizations.
Rose Mary Fry is the Founding Executive Director of the Non Profit Management Assistance Network, an organization that meets the needs of Texas nonprofits through work with nonprofit resource centers and academic providers in Texas. Previously, she was the Executive Director of the Nonprofit Resource Center of Texas in San Antonio, the oldest resource center in the state and one of the largest in terms of budget and staff.
Birgit Green, Ph.D. is the Director of Outreach at the Division of Outreach and Distance Education at Texas Tech. She has 18 years of experience in the planning, development, and implementation of community and professional development programs.
Bob Hickerson is currently the Chief Operating Officer for Texas Tech’s Off-Campus academic centers, managing centers in Amarillo, Abilene, Marble Falls, Fredericksburg, El Paso and Junction. He previously served as Executive Director of the Texas Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service, a state agency that managed the Texas AmeriCorps grant program and served as the Governor’s Office of Volunteerism under Governor Bush.
Linda A. Krefting, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Management at the Rawls College of Business at Texas Tech University where she teaches courses in human resource management and the management of organizational behavior and design.
Thomas Longoria, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for Public Service at Texas Tech University. His areas of specialization include urban and ethnic politics, urban administration, and nonprofit administration. He is currently working on projects examining interrelations between the governmental, for profit, and nonprofit sectors.
Jimmy Pendergrass has been a partner with Pratas, Smith and Moore LLC of Lubbock since 1986, which recently merged with the regional firm of Accounting and Consulting Group, LLP. He is primarily responsible for the firm’s audit and accounting practice, as well as its quality control practice, and retirement plan administration services. He handles all facets of tax preparation for individuals, partnerships, corporations, nonprofit organizations.
Eugene Wang, Ph.D. is an assistant professor in educational psychology at Texas Tech University. He served as the regional manager for clinical outcomes studies at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center, from 1995 until 2000. He has been involved in program planning and evaluation since 1995 working with agencies such as the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation, Region 17 Education Service Center, Covenant Health System, Community Health Center of Lubbock, and others. He also has been an evaluation consultant for the United Way in Lubbock,Wichita Falls and Abilene.
Marijane Wernsman, Ph.D. has taught writing at Texas Tech University for 28 years. She has taught honors nonprofit public relations, as well as rhetoric, technical, public relations and magazine writing. She served as assistant dean of the Texas Tech’s Graduate School for 16 years.

Fee
The registration fee for the nine-part series is $550. It includes materials, continental breakfast, refreshment breaks and continuing education credits.
Cancellation
Refunds less a $25 administrative fee will be granted for refund requests received by May 25, 2008. Thereafter, only partial refunds can be given.
