Favorite things to do in Lubbock

Coming from a big city like Dallas, I was wary of the fun activities and opportunities that Lubbock had to offer, but after being here for more than 3 years, I have found a couple of my favorite things to do. My freshman year I attended many of the theatre performances put on by Texas Tech on campus. Since I didn't have a car, this was a great opportunity to have something to do on a slow night, it was free and I was supporting my other peers here on campus. On the weekends I enjoy going to the Stars and Stripes Drive-In theatre to see a new movie with friends. The drive in is located close to campus and I always have a great time seeing new movies and getting to hang out with my friends. Also on the weekends, I enjoy playing soccer or walking at a local park. Many of the parks in Lubbock are very scenic and give your student a great opportunity to get out of their dorm room but also stay active during the week. These are just a few of my favorite things to do, but whatever your student likes or enjoys doing, there is something in Lubbock here for them.

  1. Go to the park- There are so many parks in Lubbock all with different amenities! Some have playgrounds, lakes, volleyball and basketball courts, walking/running trails, etc. It's nice to go out and enjoy the outdoors every once in a while.
  2. First Friday Art Trail- This is a great opportunity to explore our local culture and experience a different side of Lubbock. It is a self-guided public art event that happens the first Friday of every month all over downtown Lubbock. There is live music, beautiful artwork, and delicious food. I look forward to this event every month!
  3. Student Rec Center—The rec center in Lubbock is so much more than a gym. There is a rock climbing wall available for students and we also have the best leisure pool (some bias there), I like to spend a lot of time here whether it be working out or getting tan out by the pool.

Sadly, Lubbock has a bad reputation when it comes to "things to do", but, surprisingly there is a lot to do if you do things with the right people! For example, one of my favorite things to do in the fall is to go to the At'l Do Farms Corn Maize. They are only open from September to November, but it is a great thing to do with a big group of people! They have a corn maize, a corn cannon, hayride, and places for campfires! The best part is that with a college ID its $2 off the entrance fee! Another fun thing to do in Lubbock is the live version of Escape the Room! It's a small brand-new company called "Trapped!", rooms that you are locked into and you have to find a way to escape. There are clues everywhere to help you find the key to unlock the door to freedom! It also is $2 off with a college ID and totally worth it!

I have to admit that I am a home-body, but when I do get the chance to go out I mostly find myself at the movies. Alamo Drafthouse is so much fun! They not only play regular movies, but also sing-along and quote-alongs to classic and popular movies too. And they serve food; who wouldn't want that?!

Lubbock isn't a huge place but there is still quite a bit to do during your down time here at Tech. One of my favorite things to do is catch a movie at Alamo draft house. Getting to eat while enjoying a movie is always a perk for me as well as the student discount that Tech students receive. I also enjoy driving out to Palo Dura Canyon, which isn't too far off from Lubbock. It's a nice day trip that a few friends and I can make just to explore, hike, and even zip line.

  1. Corn Maize – In different themes every year, fall rolls around, and then one thing your student should do is the corn maize. Encourage them to take a group of friends and complete the corn maize. Always look for it at the end of September through mid-November. In different themes, like Wizard of Oz and Texas icons, it is always fun to go out and complete.
  2. Drive-In Movies – This works as a perfect night out with a group of friends or as a date. Encourage your student to pack their blankets and fold up chairs if they wants to sit out on a beautiful night and watch a couple movies. The drive-in is not expensive at all, your student gets to see two recently released movies, and enjoy time with their friends.
  3. Prairie Dog Town – Your student should take a free afternoon to go see Prairie Dog Town. Located in Mackenzie Park, these animals are extremely adorable and always fun to watch. It is was established in 1935 and is a protected area for prairie dogs to roam. Also it costs nothing to go see them.

One of my favorite events in Lubbock is the First Friday Art Trail. It happens the first Friday of every month and is free. You get to walk around the downtown area on a Friday night and look at a bunch of different art and eat some great food. I highly recommend checking it out at least once even if you aren't super into art! When it's not a first Friday, on Friday nights I love to go to Alamo Draft house. It's Movie Theater where you get to watch a movie and eat dinner. Eating dinner in the dark is little weird but the experience is great!

Lubbock has a several fun things to do as a student, but two of my favorite things to do is go to "The Range" with a group of friends. The range is a casual driving range with music, washer pits, and an oven fired pizza pit. It's a little ways away from campus so you will need a car if you plan to go, but it is a great environment for anyone whether you are a golfing pro or have never taken a swing.
