Alcohol Edu
In an effort to replace "scare" tactics as a method to curb underage and excessive drinking at Texas Tech, the Division of Student Affairs and Student Health Services have elected to implement a new program. AlcoholEdu was cited in Newsweek's Kaplan College Guide (2004) as largely focusing on educating students about the risks related to drinking by a program using information about
- alcohol's effects on memory by case studies,
- interactive computer graphics,
- Question & Answers.
Using a reverse psychology known as social norming, AlcoholEdu explains to students the detailed effects of alcohol consumption without all the negative fear tactics. Using a customized computer program that balances information with individual alcohol use patterns coupled with personalized feedback, the AlcoholEdu results appear promising. Results are encouraging:
- AlcoholEdu has been administered at 400+ colleges,
- fraternities and sororities using the program cut heavy drinking by 14%,
- overall levels of alcohol abstention are up.
In addition to educational components of the course, AlcoholEdu includes a data
collection component that will facilitate ongoing assessment of the needs of
the campus community, allowing student affairs departments to keep educational
programs and services current and effective.
