EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY DOCUMENTS
All employees of Texas Tech,
citizens and noncitizens, hired after November
6, 1986, must complete Section 1 of Form I-9 at the time of hire, which
is the actual beginning of
employment. The authority for collecting
this employment eligibility information is the Immigration Reform and Control
Act of 1986, Pub. L. 99-603 (8 USC 1324a).
This information is for Texas Tech to verify the eligibility of
individuals for employment to preclude the unlawful hiring, or recruiting or
referring for a fee of aliens who are not authorized to work in the United
States.
This information will be
used by Texas Tech as a record of their basis for determining eligibility of an
employee to work in the United States.
The form will be kept by Texas Tech and made available for inspection by
officials of the BCIS, the Department of Labor and the Office of Special
Counsel for Immigrations Related Unfair Employment Practices.
Submission of the
information requested is voluntary.
However, an individual may not begin employment unless stated documents
are presented and the form is completed.
Texas Tech is subject to civil or criminal penalties if they do not
comply with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.
Texas Tech cannot specify which
of the document(s) stated below they will accept from a new employee.
A new employee may
present one of the following:
- U.S. Passport (unexpired or expired)
- Unexpired foreign passport, with I-551 stamp or
attached INS form I-94 indicating unexpired employment authorization
- Permanent Resident Card or Alien Registration
Receipt Card with photograph (INS Form I-551)
- Unexpired Temporary Resident Card (INS From
I-688)
- Unexpired Employment Authorization Card (INS
From I-688A)
- Unexpired Employment Authorization Document
issued by the INS which contains a photograph (INS Form I-688B or INS Form
I-766)
OR
One of these documents:
- Driver’s license or ID card issued by a state
or outlying possession of the United States provided it contains a photograph
or information, such as name, date of birth, gender, height, eye color and
address
- ID card issued by federal, state or local
government agencies or entities, provided it contains a photograph or
information such as name, date of birth, gender, height, eye color and
address
- School ID card with a photograph
- Voter’s registration card
- U.S. Military card or draft record
- Military dependent’s ID card
- U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Card
- Native American tribal document
- Driver’s license issued by a Canadian government
authority
For persons under age 18 who
are unable to present a document listed above:
- School record or report card
- Clinic, doctor or hospital record
- Day-care or nursery school record
AND
- U.S. social security card issued by the Social
Security Administration (other than a card stating it is not valid for
employment)
- Certification of Birth Abroad issued by the
Department of State (Form FS-545 or Form DS-1350
- Original or certified copy of a birth
certificate issued by a state, county, municipal authority or outlying
possession of the United States bearing an official seal
- Native American tribal document
- U.S. Citizen ID Card (INS Form I-197)
- ID Card for use of Resident Citizen in the
United States (INS Form I-179)
- Unexpired employment authorization document issued
by the INS (other than those listed above)
