Integrated Petrophysical/Geological Characterization Lab

Research Topic: Formation Evaluation

Through the new Integrated Reservoir Characterization Lab, the Formation Evaluation group at Texas Tech applies an interactive approach combining geological and petrophysical analyses to develop a comprehensive perspective on the reservoir. Current and planned research activities span a broad range of interests in both conventional and unconventional reservoirs, primarily focused on carbonates and Permian Basin plays.

Recent and ongoing research includes a large-scale characterization of the San Andres horizontal (SAHZ) play in west Texas; log-derived permeability prediction in low-porosity carbonates of the U.S. Mid-Continent region; evaluating effectiveness of permeability prediction models in the SAHZ play; and, exploring the use of porosity stratal slice mapping as a tool for streamlining exploration and development in regionally extensive carbonate plays. We recently completed a project under direction of the Illinois Geological Survey to identify fluid contacts and characterize saturations in a Thick Cypress Sand residual oil zone (ROZ) in the Illinois Basin.
