Overview of Graduate Program

The Department of Petroleum Engineering has an international reputation for graduates who enter the industry with a strong practical background in petroleum production, reservoir engineering, drilling, advanced recovery methods, and gas technology. Specific areas of study include drilling, well completions, fluid rheologies, phase behavior, production technology, reservoir analysis, economic evaluations, logging and logging interpretation skills, reservoir evaluation fundamentals, hydraulics, equipment, reservoir simulation, gas behavior, and production system design and optimization.

The primary educational goal of the department is to maintain a curriculum that does the following:

  • Prepares students for immediate and successful entry into the petroleum industry or for advanced study;
  • Provides a proper balance between practical and theoretical education;
  • Responds to both short and long-term technological needs of industry; and
  • Teaches social and professional responsibilities.
