Skills Testing

When posting office clerical support positions, hiring managers may request that final applicants take skills assessment at the Employment Office prior to or following their interview. The Employment Office offers multiple tests to assist in assessing applicants’ software and keyboarding skills. These tests will provide job-related information for determining who best meets the needs of the position.

The Employment Office currently uses the Office Proficiency Assessment and Certification (OPAC) System for administering tests. The OPAC System uses validated tests to measure the right skills for the job.

There are several primary testing groups in the OPAC System:

Computer Tests – Windows operating systems, word processing applications, and database applications;

Keyboarding Tests – typing speed and accuracy, entry of alpha/numeric data, keypad and keyboard skills, data entry;

Clerical Tests – word processing skills, alphabetic and numeric filing, and Proofreading;

Financial Tests – several common business financial tasks, plus basic math;

Professional Tests – legal and medical keyboarding, proofreading, terminology, and transcription tests.

The type of skill assessment the Employment Office is to administer may be listed in the “Additional Information” section of the Requisition. When the position is opened to the web site, the Requisition will inform applicants they may be required to take a skill assessment at the Employment Office prior to or following an interview. Hiring managers may view results online by viewing the “History/Notes section of each application.
