Interview Questions

 

The questions you choose to ask during an interview can give you key insight into who your applicant truly is. You must be mindful though, because the questions you ask can also be discriminatory, therefore illegal.

 

The qualifications and questions should be job related.

   Here are some sample questions of what you may ask:
 
Introductory questions -
- Briefly summarize your work history & education.
- What interested you in applying for this position?
Recent graduate questions -
- Describe how the college experience has prepared you for this job.
- Why are you applying for a job in a field other than your major?
General past job performance -
- Tell me about your last position. What you did, people you worked for, etc.
- I see you were unemployed for a period of time. Tell me about it.
- Give me an example of when you demonstrated your customer service skills.
- Describe your level of experience in (..list essential job functions..).
Goals -
- How does this job fit in with your overall career goals?
- How do you define success in the job?
- Can you pinpoint specific things in your past experience that affected your present career objectives?
   Here are samples of questions you may NEVER ask:
 
Never Ask Questions on age -
- How old are you?
- When did you graduate from high school? College?
Never Ask Questions on sex -
- Are you married?
- Do you intend to get married?
- Are you straight?
- Why are you interested in this job which is traditionally male/female?
Never Ask Questions on ethnic origin/race -
- What’s your nationality?
- Are you bilingual? (unless job related)
- Where are your parents from?
Never Ask Questions on religion/political beliefs -
- What church are you a member of?
- Can you work on Sundays? Saturdays?
- With what political party are you affiliated?
- To what social clubs, societies and/or lodges do you belong?
Never Ask Questions on disabilities -
- What health problems do you have?
- Can you read small print? (unless job related)
- When were you in the hospital last?
Never Ask General Questions such as-
- Do you have a baby sitter?
- Are you the head of the household?
- Do you have transportation to and from work?
- What do you want to be doing five years from now?
- Have you ever been “arrested” for a crime?
- Do you have conviction record?
- Do you have less than honorable military?
- Are you pregnant?
- What is your weight?
- Do you have an ownership of home or What is you rental status?
- Did you ever file for bankruptcy?
- How many Loans/Credit cards do you have?
- Questions about wage assignments or garnishments.
- Questions about worker’s compensation claims.
