Texas Tech employees enjoy a comprehensive choice of insurance plans including medical, dental, vision, life, accident, short-term disability, long-term disability, long-term care insurance, and TexFlex.

 Full Time (Faculty/Staff) Employee

The State of Texas / Texas Tech pays the health insurance premiums for full time employees and half the premiums for their dependents.

If you are a full-time employee, working at a job where your regular schedule is 40 hours or more per week, you will be automatically enrolled in HealthSelect, if you make no health carrier selection, unless you formally decline health coverage.

 Part Time Employee or Graduate Student

If you are regularly scheduled to work less than 40 hours or are a graduate student, you are considered a part-time employee.

If you are a part-time employee, you may select health coverage for you and your dependents, but you will not be automatically enrolled. The State pays half the health insurance premiums for part-time employees and 25% of their dependents’ premium costs.

If you have previously waived your coverage and your employment status has changed to Full-Time, please contact the benefits office immediately.

Initial Enrollment - Faculty Staff
 

As an employee of Texas Tech, you are eligible for participation in the Teacher Retirement System or Optional Retirement Program, you are eligible to enroll in the insurance coverage offered by the State.

 

You will receive many valuable benefits through the Texas Employees Group Benefits Program (GBP), administered by the Employees Retirement System of Texas. The State of Texas offers all benefits-eligible employees comprehensive health and prescription drug benefits, along with $5,000 of basic term life insurance and $5,000 of accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) coverage after a 90-day waiting period

 

If you are new to State employment, you will become eligible for health insurance on the first day of the month following your 90th day of employment. For example, if you begin employment on June 06 of any Year, you will be eligible for health insurance on October 1 of that Year. Calculate your eligibility period.

Initial Enrollment - Graduate Student
 

As a graduate student at Texas Tech, you may be eligible for state insurance coverage if you meet the following conditions:

You are not eligible for participation in TRS.

You are employed by the university at least 50% time for a definite period of 4½ months or a semester of more than four months.

As a condition of employment, you must be enrolled in graduate level courses at the university.
