Health Select and First Care, or you might
waive medical coverage. Both plans provide comprehensive

Dental health is very important, so ERS has two dental plans available to employees and retirees eligible for health insurance under the Group Benefits Program (GBP). Each has different costs, benefits, service areas and participating dentists.
Enrolling in one of the ERS dental plans never requires evidence of insurability (EOI) (proof of good health). For more information about dental insurance:

The State of Texas provides basic group term life coverage of $5,000 when you enroll in medical insurance through the Group Benefits Program (GBP). The
benefits also includes $5,000 of accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) coverage. You do not have to sign up for this coverage because it is automatic with your enrollment in GBP health insurance. If you have waived or dropped your health insurance with the GBP, you do not have this
coverage. For more information about basic term life and AD&D: Click Here
In addition to this basic life and AD&D, you may increase the amount for yourself and add coverage for your dependents..

Disability insurance helps you pay your expenses if you are unable to work because of a sickness or injury that makes you totally disabled. Sign up during your first 31 days as a new employee, no questions asked.
With this coverage, you can receive a portion of your income if you become disabled and are unable to work. Think of it this way: If you’re unable to work, you’re not receiving a paycheck. If you have disability insurance, you at least get a portion of that paycheck.
During your first 31 days on the job, you should take advantage of the opportunity to sign up for these important benefits - without proof of good health (ERS calls this “evidence of insurability,” or EOI). For more information:
After your first 31 days, your next chance to sign up for disability insurance will be Summer Enrollment, and you will have to go through the EOI process. Send in your completed EOI applicationto the address on the form.
Short-term disability coverage and long-term disability coverage are two different benefits. You can sign up for one or both. Click on a benefit below for more information:
Short-term disability insurance
NOTE : This coverage is available to employees only, not dependents.

For income-eligible families with children under the age of 19, the SKIP program may provide lower premiums for your dependent coverage.
As a new employee, you have a health coverage waiting period that ends on the first of the month after your 90th day on the job. During this waiting period, you can apply for SKIP. If approved, your SKIP supplement starts in the same month as your health coverage. This means that you and your SKIP-approved children start your health insurance coverage at the same time.
If you need to add on other children not approved for SKIP, do so within 30 days of your SKIP effective date. Talk to your benefits coordinator or contact ERS for assistance. If you miss this 30-day window, you may not be able to add on your other children until Summer Enrollment.
For more information, call (877) KIDS-NOW (543-7669) and wait for the prompt for SKIP information.
