
The objective of this 3-credit hour course is to understand and discuss major issues impacting the production of animal agriculture. During the semester 11 issues will be reviewed, one each week. An online class discussion will take place each Tuesday beginning at 7 p.m. central time, participation in the open discussion is required.
Topics will include:
1) Domestication of Animals and Their Contribution to Human Welfare (Topic 1),
2) Diet-Health Issues (Topics 2),
3) Feed vs. Food; Do Livestock Compete with Humans for Food Resources (Topic 3),
4) Feed Additives and Growth Promotants in Animal Production (Topic 4),
5) Environmental Concerns Involving Livestock Production (Topic 5),
6) Food Quality and Safety Issues (Topic 6),
7) Corporate vs. family farms (Topic 7)
7) Bioethics, Animal Welfare, Animal Rights, and Biotechnology Issues part I
8) Bioethics, Animal Welfare, Animal Rights, and Biotechnology Issues part II
9) Bioterrorism (Topic 10),
10) Livestock Integration into Sustainable Resource Utilization (Topic 11).
Along with class discussions, writing assignments are required, these assignments are to be turned n over the web, and two online exams will be given. The purpose of the assignments and exams is to give the students an opportunity to explore topics in more detail and bring more detail and views into the discussion room.
