Feeding and Caring for Pigs From Weaning to Market
Note the green pasture below. The hut in the back of the pen provides shelter.
The fencing is welded wire, also called hog wire. Electric fence will not contain pigs at 4 to12 weeks of age. A more sturdy fence is required.

Ample space assures maintenance of ground cover.

Some areas, such as around the feeders become bare. Over years, these spots should be rotated.

This is an example of a poor, but not horrible, outdoor unit. There is no ground cover. The waterer leaks and the pigs have a make-shift shelter. If this systems is used, the pens should be rotated onto new ground at least each 6 weeks. This will minimize disease problems and if the site is re-seeded and left dormant for about 1-2 years, it will be able to be used again.
