Departments & Programs of
Undergraduate Education & Student Affairs

Strictly speaking, there are seventeen departments that comprise the Division of Undergraduate Education & Student Affairs. Limiting this list to represent our named departments might be useful in introducing the structure of this division, but would not be helpful in communicating the exciting programs and initiatives that work collaboratively to support the academic and holistic success of our Red Raiders. Instead, the list that follows presents a much bigger picture, providing more insight on the ways Undergraduate Education & Student Affairs is actively working to demonstrate that we don't simply value the 'pursuit of excellence,' we embody and promote it.

To connect with the people who work together to lead and deliver each of these programs,

Ombuds Office

The Ombuds Office at the Texas Tech University provides informal, neutral, and confidential dispute resolution services. The office assists people with interpersonal misunderstandings or disputes as well as those with concerns about academic or administrative issues. Every attempt is made to help individuals resolve their concerns fairly and, if possible, informally. The office operates independently as a supplement to existing administrative or formal grievance procedures and has no formal decision-making authority. The office does not act an advocate for either side in a dispute. Rather, it is an advocate for fairness. Perhaps most importantly, the Office operates confidentially, which means its personnel do not acknowledge who has--or has not--used the Ombuds Office unless explicitly granted permission to do so by the particular individual.

Student Counseling Center

The Student Counseling Center provides short term counseling and consultation to students who are experiencing emotional and psychological problems that are interfering with their ability to be successful in school and with their individual personal development. Our purpose is not to provide intense treatment for severe, chronic, or long-term mental illness or mental health problems. Due to the high volume of students that are seen in the SCC, individual therapy is provided on a time-limited basis. Students are provided 8 individual sessions per academic year should they be found appropriate for our services during the Walk-In Clinic Intake. Other services provided by the SCC have an unlimited amount of usage (i.e. group therapy, couples counseling, outreach services, and mind/body lab).

Student Disability Services

At the Texas Tech Student Disability Services Office our mission is to enhance each student’s learning through the provision of programs and services for students with a disability. Our goal is to assist you in attaining your academic, career, and personal goals – regardless of any physical, learning, psychological, psychiatric, or other documented disability you may have. Within the SDS Office we provide reasonable in-class accommodations based on the documented needs of each of our students. We also have a comprehensive student retention program and offer skill-building workshops designed to enhance students’ in-class learning. These topics are focused on the skills necessary to be successful both in the classroom and in life, and topics include areas such as organization, time management, note taking, tips for test taking, and many others. Accommodations are tailored to the individual rather than the disability, and are based on information contained in each student’s documentation.

The TECHniques Center is a specialized, fee based program of Student Disability Services which addresses the needs of students with LD or AD/HD. The TECHniques program provides 4-5 hours of individual tutoring per week, by tutors who are certified by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA). The TECHniques Center also provides individualized assistance with time management, study skills and self advocacy skills. Students are required to meet weekly with their counselor to review progress and grades.

University Advising serves the campus community via seven distinct and yet closely related advising endeavors:

  • University Advising (the department) carries out directives on advising, promotes national standards of excellence, facilitates collaboration, and provides an initial contact point for academic advising matters at Texas Tech University.
  • The University Advising Center is a physical space and open door in 079 Holden Hall. The Center provides accessible staff who assist students seeking academic direction, and serves as home for all UA programs and appointments.
  • Exploratory & Preparatory Advising is provided for A&S Undeclared, A&S Prelaw, and University PreEngineering students by a staff of full-time academic advisors who work with their assigned student populations.
  • The TTU Discovery! Program supports the academic exploration of any student considering a change of major, including the students assigned to University advising by academic designation.
  • The TTU PreLaw Program provides four years of academic guidance for any TTU student or graduate who is pursuing an education in a school of law. The PreLaw Program also administers an interdisciplinary minor in legal studies.
  • The TTU PreEngineering Program, provides an opportunity for students not directly admitted into an engineering major to engage the preparation necessary for them to successfully transition into their intended program of study.
  • A&S On-Site Recruiters for Prospective Students provide guidance for each prospective student (and family) when these campus visitors are considering majors in Arts & Sciences or a future education in law, and when these future Red Raiders are unsure of their best-fit academic majors.
