Center for Undergraduate Research Committee

Charge:

The Undergraduate Research Committee will facilitate communications between various campus units and individuals engaged in undergraduate research activities, advise the provost on matters pertaining to undergraduate research activities and initiatives across campus, and, as appropriate, across the system.

As the committee members determine it is appropriate, they will develop resources for those engaged in undergraduate research activities; evaluate, recommend, and/or implement ideas and initiatives related to undergraduate research; and develop a comprehensive assessment plan for undergraduate research.

Selection:

The provost will request that the deans solicit the chairpersons of the various departments within their colleges to submit names of potential members from the various departments within their colleges. The provost, in consultation with the Undergraduate Research Committee members, will select the 11 primary representatives from each of the 11 university fields of study clusters.

The provost, in consultation with the organized standing undergraduate research programs and the members of the Undergraduate Research Committee, will select the 4 representatives from the organized standing undergraduate research programs.

The provost, in consultation with the organized standing undergraduate research programs, will select the 4 student representatives from the organized standing undergraduate research programs.

The provost, in consultation with the Undergraduate Research Committee members, will select the representative from the University Libraries.

The provost, in consultation with the Undergraduate Research Committee members, will select the two representatives from the Office of the Provost.

Chairperson and Vice Chair:

The committee will be chaired by one of the representatives from the Office of the Provost.  The other representative from the Office of the Provost will serve as vice chair. 

Cluster Teams:

In addition to the above named members of the committee, the committee will be supported by the work of 11 cluster teams, each representing one of the 11 university fields of study clusters. Each cluster team will be comprised of the primary representative from one of the 11 university fields of study clusters, a secondary representative from each cluster (who will serve as the representative to the committee when the primary representative is unable to attend), a group of faculty from the various majors within each cluster, a library liaison, and a student member whose major or research interest area corresponds with the cluster.

Operating Procedures:

The committee will meet September, October, November, January, February, March, and April during the academic year to discuss, evaluate and implement ideas and initiatives related to undergraduate research. Minutes will be taken and reviewed at each meeting.

Membership Code:

  1. One (1) primary representative from each of the eleven university fields of study clusters, who will also provide leadership from his/her respective cluster team, as outlined under the heading “cluster teams.”
  2. One (1) secondary representative from each of the eleven university fields of study clusters will be appointed to provide representation to the committee when the primary representative is not available; in addition, each secondary representative will provide leadership for the respective cluster team as outlined under the heading “cluster teams.”
  3. One (1) representative from each of the four (4) organized standing undergraduate research programs:
    1. College of Agricultural Sciences Research Sequence program
    2. Honors College Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program
    3. TTU/Howard Hughes Medical Institute Science Education Program
    4. McNair Scholars Program
  4. One (1) student representative from each of the four organized standing undergraduate research programs
