Sheryl Linda Santos, Ph.D.

Dean of the College of Education

Dr. Sheryl L. Santos assumed the deanship of the College of Education in July, 2003. She received her undergraduate and Masters Degrees in Spanish from Queens College in New York City and her Ph.D. from Kansas State University in Curriculum and Instruction, with a specialization in bilingual education. Dean Santos is an energetic advocate for high quality public education. She is the author of numerous publications and professional presentations in the field of language minority education. Prior to becoming a teacher educator and university administrator, Dr. Santos was a classroom teacher with rich experiences in urban and rural settings spanning elementary, middle level, and high school teaching.

She has traveled, studied, and worked in varied places around the world and nation, is a former Fulbright Senior Scholar, an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow, and a recipient of the New York Board of Regents Management and Professional Development Fellowship. Dean Santos also served for several years as an escort- interpreter on special assignment for the U.S. Department of State, Washington, D.C.

Immediately prior to coming to Lubbock, Dr. Santos was Dean and Professor of the School of Education at California State University, Bakersfield. Previous to that, she was a tenured faculty member and Director of the Division of Curriculum & Instruction in the College of Education at Arizona State University, Tempe. Her first years as a university faculty member were at East Texas State University (now Texas A & M, Commerce).

Strategic directions for the College of Education include increasing diversity, partnerships and collaborations, and technology integration in the teaching and learning processes.
