Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures
Melissa Hays is the coordinator of American Sign Language (ASL) studies in the Department of Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures at Texas Tech. She also is an instructor for ASL courses. She originally began teaching ASL at TTU in 2000, after serving as interpreter coordinator/counseling specialist in Student Disability Services. She left in 2008 and returned in the Fall 2010 semester. Hays holds Master Interpreter Certification from the Texas Board for the Evaluation of Interpreters. She has worked as a certified interpreter since 1990 in a variety of settings, including postsecondary, platform, medical, community and religious. Hays has a B.S. in rehabilitation studies from Stephen F. Austin State University and M.A. in religious education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
