A CAREFUL AND STRICT INQUIRY INTO THE MODERN PREVAILING NOTIONS OF THAT FREEDOM OF THE WILL BY JONATHON EDWARD

Publication Date: 1754

A Careful and Strict Inquiry into the Modern Prevailing Notions of that Freedom of the Will, which is supposed to be essential to Moral Agency, Vertue and Vice, Reward and Punishment, Praise and Blame. This is the first edition of the first great American philosophic work. Edwards was the individual chiefly responsible for the "Great Awakening" that swept American colonies in the 1730's and the 1740's, and Freedom of the Will was his most extensive and brilliant exposition of the Calvinist dogma underlying the revival. Grolier American Hundred calls Edwards the "first great philosophic intelligence in American history;" Johnson calls the work "one of the few great books in English theology." #0112
