"The first National Magazine was issued in the city of Richmond, Virginia, by James Lyon on June 1, 1799. It was published 'semi-quarterly' and four numbers constituted a volume of 397 pages. Six numbers were published in Richmond, after which Lyon removed to the new seat of the federal government."
