Garland
A. Weeks can trace his Texan ancestry to 1835, counting to six
generations. Though born in Amarillo, Texas, Weeks spent most of his
childhood in Wichita Falls. After residing in Colorado for many
years, Weeks returned to Lubbock, where he still lives.
Weeks' professional career –
over 35 years – has earned him several honors, including two that
fulfilled his personal goals as a sculptor: election to full
membership in the National Academy of Western Art and in the
National Sculpture Society. Additionally, the Texas State
Legislature named him Official Sculptor of Texas in 1995, while the
National Sculpture Society advanced Weeks to the level of Fellow in
2004.
Weeks'
recent commissions include a full-size WWII Infantry soldier
memorial in Tyler, Texas, a life-size Revolutionary War memorial
honoring General Francis Marion (The Swamp Fox) in Moncks Corner,
South Carolina, and a ram's head fountain for Angelo State
University. Weeks is currently engaged in several commissions: a
public safety memorial comprised of six figures at life-and-a-half
scale honoring first responders, a larger-than-life portrait bust of
Preston Smith, along with personal sculpting endeavors.
"As
a representational, figurative sculptor of the 21st century, I pay
homage to the great voices of the sculptors of the past, may of whom
are my heroes.
"While
I repeatedly come home to the human figure, it is not to the
exclusion of other animal and allegorical interests. Variety in
subjects stimulates and invigorates the imagination and provides one
a wider, more comprehensive view of life –
a broader diet of artistic nourishment ... The artist must see what
every man has seen and think what no one else has thought.
"I
have come to realize and appreciate the never-ending learning curve
we artists experience every day, every year, every decade –
that's part of the love and fascination we have for our chosen
profession." – Garland Weeks, 2007
