Mail Camp

The mail camp was located on the Mare Pasture of the Lowrance Ranch, some 25 miles northeast of Guthrie in Knox County, Texas. The single-door, stacked rock structure with a pole and brush roof dates from the late 1870s. It is located north of an old military/stageline road and may have served as a rest stop or way station for the early military couriers. Later, it may have been used by postal contractors as they handled mail for early ranch settlers. Research is ongoing to confirm the information, but it is known that the mail camp served to help establish settlement of the frontier for ranch use. Donated by Ruth Lowrance in memory of her late husband, Ed.
