Paniolo Traditions: Hawaiian Cowboys & Culture

May 18 to September 30, 2007

Listen to the Paniolo Traditions Podcast

Aloha!

This special exhibit traces the unique history of cattle and cowboys in Hawaii, a story that began more than 200 years ago when Spanish Colonial longhorns were delivered by a British Navy ship.

Hawaii's biggest and most famous cattle company, the Parker Ranch, celebrates its 160th anniversary in 2007. The founding of Parker's business is only one part of the fascinating tale introduced here. We will touch upon just a few of the people and diverse cultures, their equally varied skills and a handful of amazing contributions to a rich history that is like no other.

The facts and legends about these islands have grown together so little details may not agree. The exact number of cattle (from four to a dozen) that survived the first sea voyage (in 1792 or 1793) doesn't matter as much as the effort made to get the animals to Hawaii and the determination of King Kamehameha to protect his new charges.
