At Hilcorp Energy Company, one of the largest privately-held, independent oil-and-gas exploration and production companies in the United States, Curtis Smith oversees all land department functions. They include oil-and-gas leasing, joint venture negotiations, real estate acquisitions and new venture opportunities. He managed Hilcorp's leasing and joint venture activities in the Eagle Ford and Utica trends, acquiring more than 300,000 acres in a three-year period.
His career began with Texaco Inc. in Midland, TX. Prior to joining Hilcorp in 2002, Smith held various land, international business development and commercial positions with Oxy, Bass Enterprises and served as commercial manager for Santa Fe Energy in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Smith is active in various professional organizations, including the American Association of Professional Landmen, the Houston Association of Professional Landmen and the Independent Petroleum Association of America. In addition, he is a graduate of Leadership Midland and has coached his three children's various sports teams in the Spring Branch Memorial Sports Association.
Smith graduated from Texas Tech University with a B.B.A. in Petroleum Land Management (1984). His extracurricular activities at the university included Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and president of the Student Landman's Association.
