150-hour Program in Accounting
The 150-hour Program in Accounting, which serves as the flagship Accounting program in the Rawls College of Business, allows students to obtain both a bachelor's and master's degree in Accounting during a five-year, 150-credit-hour degree plan. This program is designed specifically for students who want to become certified public accountants (CPAs). Our graduates are in high demand, as reflected in placement rates at or near 100 percent every year for the past 25 years. In addition, the pass rate on the CPA exam is well above the national average for graduates of the 150-hour program.
The program integrates undergraduate and graduate studies, including opportunities for professional internship experience and study abroad. The typical degree plan calls for students to complete the majority of their undergraduate coursework in Accounting by the end of the junior year. In the Fall semester of the senior year, students begin taking graduate courses, before leaving campus during the Spring semester for a paid internship in either public accounting or industry. Students have internship opportunities throughout the Texas marketplace, as well as a host of other global financial hubs such as New York City, San Francisco, San Jose and London. Upon returning from the internship, students resume their graduate studies and, if needed, finish any undergraduate requirements. In the last semester of the program, students commence preparing for the CPA exam, targeting successful completion prior to graduation. Once all academic requirements have been finished, Rawls 150-hour students are awarded both B.B.A. and M.S.A degrees.
At the graduate level, students choose between the Audit/Financial Reporting and Taxation tracks, both of which boast high placement rates for their students. Graduates from both tracks generally begin their careers in public accounting, with several alumni eventually earning promotions to partner within these firms. Others leverage their professional experience in related fields or other entrepreneurial ventures. Throughout their careers, our graduates encounter an amazing variety of exciting and challenging opportunities around the globe.
