The Texas Tech chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) was the recipient of SHRM's "Outstanding Student Chapter" award for 2016-17. The Rawls College's SHRM chapter was one of only 20 chapters out of an applicant pool of 300 to receive this prestigious award, and is the second Texas-based student chapter to ever be recognized at the national level. Dallas Nichokas, vice president of external relations; Jessica Layton, president; and Zackery New, vice president of administration, attended the national conference held in New Orleans on June 18-21, 2017 to accept the award on behalf of the chapter.
Feruzan Irani Williams, professor of practice in management and faculty advisor for the Rawls College's SHRM chapter is honored by this national recognition.
"It is a great honor for our chapter to receive national recognition, especially given that this is the first time our student chapter applied for a national SHRM award. Our chapter leadership diligently worked throughout the year to bring innovative programs and activities to its membership, and I expect their efforts to create valuable student learning experiences outside the classroom will continue to be successful. Their hard work and dedication to the profession has been recognized by both the national SHRM organization and the Texas Tech campus," said Williams.
Earlier this year, the chapter also received the "Overall Student Organization of the Year" award for 2016-2017 from the Texas Tech Center for Campus Life office, which recognizes SHRM's success in helping members transition from college to a career in human resources, their outstanding leadership, and coordination of effective activities. The chapter was also nominated this year for the "Best Example of Teamwork" award, "Most Improved Organization of the Year" award, "Outstanding New Student Organization of the Year" award, and "Student Organization of the Year" award. SHRM's faculty advisor, Feruzan Irani Williams, was nominated for the "Outstanding Organization Advisor of the Year" award.
"These chapters truly represent the future of the HR profession," said Susan Post, SHRM-SCP. "Their achievements go above and beyond their everyday academic and work commitments and we applaud the positive impact their efforts have on their schools, their local communities and beyond."
