Department of Recreational Sports Policies

The Department of Recreational Sports’ philosophy dictates that no single activity, special event, and/or sport should dominate the use of facilities at the Student Recreation Center. The Texas Tech Student Recreational Center upholds to the University Student Code of Conduct.

The Texas Tech University Department of Recreational Sports strives to conduct all activities in the most prudent manner possible. However, due to the inherent risk of injury in any activity, it is the responsibility of each participant to be aware that there are some assumed risks involved in participation. All participants are strongly urged to have a yearly medical examination and to carry medical insurance coverage. Texas Tech University and its staff are not responsible for injuries including death. Participation in Recreational Sports facilities or programming is voluntary.

Rules and policies are posted and published for distribution to our program users. All policies are established by the Department of Recreational Sports and Texas Tech University. The authority to enforce these policies is vested in the Recreational Sports staff and the administrative personnel responsible for these programs. Student employees do not have the option to overlook, change, or bend rules; their task is to conduct business according to set policies. Students in violation of Recreational Sports policies and procedures may have disciplinary action taken per the guidelines of the Texas Tech University Handbook and the Texas Tech University Code of Student Conduct.

Conduct in the Student Recreation Center

All participants are expected to play according to the rules of the Division of Recreational Sports, the intramural rules, and University Regulations. The staff of the Division of Recreational Sports reserves the right to penalize individuals or teams for violation of these rules. Participants who choose to follow unsportsmanlike practices, whether directed toward an opponent or staff member may be ejected from that contest. The ejection may be administered by a contest official, a contest supervisor or a member of the Recreational Sports staff. Examples of unsportsmanlike conduct which may result in ejection include verbal abuse, excessive technical fouls, flagrant actions toward an opponent, flagrant actions toward an official or staff member, and fighting or inciting a fight. Alcohol use and possession is a direct violation of Rec Sports policies and Code of Student Conduct (part. IX. Sec. b). Rec Sports also reserves the right to refuse participation to any player that is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Further, any participant who physically abuses an official or staff member shall have their case reviewed by professional staff of the Division of Recreational Sports to determine penalties assessed and may then have their case referred to the Judicial Officer of the Office of Campus Life for possible action. The minimum suspension for such an infraction shall normally be one calendar year from the incident and the participant must make written appeal for reinstatement after this time period

Entry Policies and Memberships

Students

All students who have paid the Rec fee may use the SRC and Aquatic Center by presenting their Texas Tech ID. Students who have waived or not paid their Rec fee must purchase a pass in the Rec Sports Office, Room 202 Student Rec Center during business hours.

Student Spouses

Bring the student’s valid Texas Tech ID card and the spouse’s drivers license when purchasing this membership in the Rec Sports Office (Room 202). Student Spouse single use entry ($10.00) with Texas Tech ID at the ID station. For spousal memberships, proof of marriage may be required when applying for membership.

Faculty/Staff

Bring proof of Texas Tech employment to the Recreational Sports Office (Room 202) to purchase a Rec Center membership. A photo ID will be made in the Recreational Sports Office, which is required upon entry.

Faculty/Staff Spouses

Bring the Faculty/Staff Rec Center membership card (or proof of Texas Tech employment) and the spouse’s driver’s license when purchasing this membership in the Recreational Sports Office (Room 202). For spousal memberships, proof of marriage may be required when applying for membership. A photo ID will be made, which is required upon entry. Faculty/ Staff single use entry fee ($10.00) can be done at the I.D. stations.

Children

Valid membership holders may purchase a membership for each of their children. Children under 17 are allowed in the SRC when the facility is open only when accompanied by an adult member. The SRC provides opportunities for parent and child to recreate together and to encourage sport and fitness development. Children must be under direct supervision, which is defined as parent and child playing together within “reach.” Several area restrictions apply: Children 16 and under are not allowed in the Free Weight Room. Children 12-16 are permitted on cardio equipment and in the Machine Weight Room, the Circuit Room and in Fitness classes only when closely supervised as defined above. Children under 12 are not permitted on cardio equipment, equipment and in the Machine Weight Room, the Circuit Room, in Fitness classes or in the Free Weight Room.

Children Spectators:

Because of facility safety issues and parental supervision conflicts during exercise, we strongly discourage children spectators during parental fitness activities.

The following restrictions apply:

  • Children are not permitted in fitness classes or the Free Weight Room as a spectator.
  • Children under 11 may not accompany and spectate a parent while the parent is exercising on cardio equipment except cardio machines on the entry level where the child is seated on the bleacher area nearest to the parent.
  • Children 12-16 must be seated in close proximity so that parent and child can verbally and visually communicate at all times.
  • Children spectators will be allowed during intramural events only with a second adult directly supervising the child in the bleacher or foyer areas on the entry level.
  • Please check the specific family hours for the pool. No flotation devices or flotation equipment are allowed for children.

Guests & Self-Sponosrship:

(17 years and older) will be admitted to the student recreation facilities when accompanied by a student, faculty, or staff with a valid Texas Tech ID or Rec Center membership card.

  • Guests must remain with their sponsoring adult at all times when visiting the facility.
  • Four guests daily may be sponsored by each eligible Rec Center card/TTU ID.
  • All guests 17 and older must present photo ID and register at the ID station. Fee is $10.00 per guest per visit. (Fee will increase to $15.00 begining on August 26, 2013)
  • All guests 16 and under must register at the ID station. Fee is $5.00 per guest per visit.
  • All facility policies apply to guests (including children).
  • If an exception to the guest limit is needed, contact the Rec Sports office one day in advance to make special arrangements.
  • Sponsors assume full responsibility for conduct of guests and any destruction of equipment and/or facilities.
  • Guests must depart the facility with the sponsoring member.
  • Guests may not check out equipment.

Guests in the following categories may self-sponsor a one day pass to the student recreation facilities for $10.00 per day.

  • Students with red and white Texas Tech ID
  • Faculty and Staff with red and white Texas Tech ID
  • Texas Tech Alumni Association Member with Member Card

Entrance Methods

There are two ways of entering the Student Recreation Center and Leisure Pool. Members can bring their valid Texas Tech ID card or use the hand scanner with their valid “R” number to gain access into the facilities. Please remember that you must have your valid TTU ID card to check out equipment.

 

Identification Cards

Don’t forget your ID card unless you have been entered in the hand scanner. ID card is still required to check out equipment. Additional identification may be required on request. Recreational Sports staff reserves the right to ask for additional photo ID at any time. When you come to the Student Recreation Center (SRC), the Recreational Aquatic Center (RAC) or Student Leisure Pool present your valid Texas Tech student ID at the I.D. desk. You may also check out equipment with your ID card.

Misuse of IDs to gain facility access will not be tolerated. All Texas Tech University student IDs are non-transferable and must be surrendered upon request. ID cards do not guarantee current enrollment at Texas Tech University. As per the code of conduct, "Students, Faculty, Staff, : Rec Center Patrons shall not allow their identification cards to be used by other persons." Recreational Sports staff will confiscate misused cards and staff may ask individual(s) to leave the facility. The offender and/or the individual named on the card will have to set up an appointment with the Assistant Director of Recreational Sports (Facilities) to have their ID released to them.

  • Texas Tech University IDs (students) or Recreational Sports membership cards must be presented to gain facility access, to check out recreation equipment, or upon request of any Recreational Sports staff member.
  • The Recreational Sports staff reserves the right to ask for additional photo ID at any time.
  • Use of Texas Tech IDs or Rec Center membership cards constitutes acceptance of the terms and conditions in effect at the time of use. Presence of a Texas Tech University ID card does not guarantee current enrollment.
  • Unauthorized use of the Texas Tech University ID card or Rec Center membership card is fraud.
  • Report missing or lost cards immediately.
  • Replacement charges apply for lost, stolen, or damaged cards, cost is $10.00.
  • ID Card Replacement: Lost or destroyed SRC permits will be replaced through the Recreational Sports Office at a cost of $10.00 per card.
  • Users wishing to gain readmittance while their ID card is being held in the Equipment Issue area or when they run outside must stop at the Equipment Issue for a hand stamp.

Conferences, Clinics, Short Courses, and Workshops

Persons 17 years and older enrolled in these programs approved by the Recreational Sports Office may be admitted to the student recreation facilities by paying a daily fee or by purchasing a one-week pass in the Recreational Sports Office (Room 202). To be eligible, presentation of a letter from the department head or some means of identification of their enrollment in the program must be shown. Pass holders must present Rec Conference Pass with picture ID.

Tours

Tours will be available free of charge to visiting individuals and groups. Arrangements should be made through the Recreational Sports Office at least 48 hours in advance.

Self-Sponsored Facility Access

Non-valid Texas Tech ID

Individuals who have a non-valid Texas Tech University ID (shown to the leftt) may “self sponsor” themselves in for $10.00 per visit. This transaction occurs at the ID stations. The ID staff will assist in completion of the form to allow access for “self-sponsored” individuals.

Please Note: Past generation Texas Tech ID cards will not be accepted.

 

 

 

 

Memberships

Students/TA's/RA's

All enrolled undergraduate and graduate students are SRC and Aquatic Center members with the exception of graduate students (TA’s and RA’s) who have waived their Rec fee. Graduate students who have waived their fees must purchase a faculty/staff membership in the Rec Sports Office. All students must present their Texas Tech ID to be admitted to Rec facilities. TA’s and RA’s who waived fees must purchase a membership at the Fac/Staff rate.

Faculty and Staff

TTU faculty and staff are eligible to use the SRC and Aquatic Center by presenting a valid membership card. All semester or annual passes include a picture ID.

Spouses

Spouse memberships are available for students and faculty/staff members. Spouses of eligible students can purchase a Semester pass ($40.00). Must bring student picture I.D. or summer pass and your driver’s license. For spousal memberships, proof of marriage may be required when applying for membership. Bring student picture I.D. or Rec Center pass and your driver's license.

Children 16 and Under

Can use the Student Recreation Center anytime, though some area restrictions do apply. Children 16 and under can use the Aquatic Center during FAMILY HOURS ONLY. All children 16 and under must be accompanied by an eligible adult. Children under 4 are admitted free of charge but must adhere to all rules.

Adjunct Membership

Allows any eligible person who purchases a membership to buy one additional membership at the adjuct rate. Eligible students may only buy an adjunct membership for the semester they are currently enrolled. Students may not purchase an annual adjunct membership.

  • Memberships are non-transferable.
  • Membership is a privilege which may be modified or revoked for cause.
  • Memberships may be purchased in the Recreational Sports Office (Room 202), Monday – Friday from 8:00am - 5:00pm; Wednesday's until 6:00pm
  • SRC Annual Passes expire on August 31 each year.
  • Semester passes expire on Dec. 31st, May 15th, or Aug. 31st.

Hours, Attire, & Tobacco/Alcohol

Hours

  • Information about Family Hours and restrictions for Child Members/Spectators of the Student Rec Center and the Recreational Aquatic Center are available in the Recreational Sports office (Room 202).
  • On Texas Tech home football Saturdays, the SRC and RAC will adjust hours according to game time. Adjusted hours will be posted the week prior to the game.

Attire

  • Proper attire (especially proper shoes in the SRC and proper swimwear at the RAC) is required for use of all Department of Recreational Sports facilities.
  • Any shoes which the Rec Center staff deems as leaving marks on the gymnasium floor or racquetball courts will be prohibited from those surfaces. Due to their propensity to leave marks, please avoid jogging shoes or black sole shoes on the gymnasium floor or racquetball courts. Jogging shoes are acceptable on the perimeter of the main gymnasium floor.
  • Proper shirts and towels are required when exercising/lifting on any weight/cardio equipment. For your safety, open toed shoes/sandals are prohibited on all exercise equipment.

Alcohol & Tobacco

  • All tobacco products are prohibited at all Recreational Sports facilities (Student Recreation Center, Recreational Aquatic Center, multipurpose fields, Softball Complex and others).
  • Alcoholic products are prohibited at all Recreational Sports facilities (Student Recreation Center, Recreational Aquatic Center, multipurpose fields, Softball Complex and others).

Food And Drinks

  • Drinks may be allowed in the facilities with a plastic, screw top, spill proof bottle. Bottled water is sold at the Equipment
    Issue window.
  • All food must be kept on the third level in the lounge area.

Facility Policies

Robert H. Ewalt Student Recreation Center

Multi-Purpose Courts

Multi-purpose areas will be available for different activities (basketball, volleyball, etc.). All participants must wear “athletic, closed-toe” non-marking rubber-soled shoes on the courts. Street shoes are not permitted. Bare feet are not permitted on court floors. Footballs and Frisbees prohibited INSIDE the facility.

During periods of high usage or during intramural competitions, at least one (1) “full-court” basketball game will be permitted. This is at the discretion of the Recreational Sports staff depending on the facility needs and available areas. When court space becomes scarce, “full-court” basketball will be prohibited. The decision to curtail “full-court” basketball will reside in the Center Manager or professional staff. Users may not grab or hold onto/hang onto basketball rims, as this may cause damage to the backboards.

Racquetball/Handball and Squash Courts

Black racquetballs are not permitted in courts. Rubber-soled, non-marking “athletic” shoes are required for play. All users are strongly recommended to use eye protection during play.

Free Weight Room

All users must wear closed-toe shoes: sandals are prohibited in the Free Weight Room. Children 16 years and under are not permitted in the Free Weight Room at any time. Collars are required for all barbell lifts. Spotters are required for all lifts above the body, squats, and heavy dumbbells. Weights and related equipment may not be rearranged or removed from the Free Weight Room. All free weights, dumbbells, plates, etc., must be returned to their respective racks following use. Failure of a user to return weights may cause a loss of recreational privileges. Shirts must be worn and towels used when using exercise or weight equipment to minimize the transmission of infections. All users must re-rack their weights. Users may not “bang” hand weights or dumbbells together as this damages the weights.

Cardiovascular Equipment

Because of facility safety issues and parental supervision conflicts during exercise, we strongly discourage children spectators during parental fitness activities.

The following restrictions apply:

  • Children are not permitted in the Free Weight Room as a spectator.
  • Children 11 years and younger may not accompany and spectate a parent while the parent is exercising on the lower level of the Rec Center. Parent utilizing machines on the entry level may be accompanied by a child spectator as long as the child is seated in the bleacher area nearest the parent.
  • Children 12-16 must be seated in close proximity so that parent and child can verbally and visually communicate at all times.

Machine Weight Room

All users must wear closed-toe shoes: sandals are prohibited on ALL equipment. Children 12 – 16 are permitted in the Machine Weight Room only when accompanied by their supervising adult. Shirts must be worn and towels used when using exercise or weight equipment to minimize the transmission of infections.

Table Tennis/Billiards and Lounge Area

This area is available during all regular facility hours. Users must keep the area clean, and use trash receptacles to dispose of litter. This is the only area where food and beverage may be consumed. Equipment available for checkout at Equipment Issue with valid TTU ID.

Mat Room

No hard-soled or black-soled shoes are permitted on the mats. Aerobic shoes may be worn while on the mats. Mats may not be moved or rearranged without prior approval by the Department of Recreational Sports.

Saunas

Food and beverage are prohibited in the saunas. Newspapers may be brought into the sauna, but must be removed by the patron when that individual leaves the sauna. Unattended items such as paper, clothing, and towels pose a fire hazard. All users must sit on a towel or wear trunks while in the sauna. Users are cautioned to avoid overexposure or prolonged use of the sauna. Pregnant females, individuals with respiratory, cardiac, or circulatory problems are urged to consult their physician prior to using the sauna. Users may not pour water onto the heating rocks—as this will result in damage to the rocks.

Equipment and Court Reservation System

Racquetball courts are available through advance reservations and a daily challenge court system to allow all recreation users a better opportunity to utilize the courts.

Reservation System

  • Eligible participants may reserve racquetball courts in the Student Recreation Center by calling the Equipment Issue area (742-1995) or by stopping by in person.
  • Reservations may be made same day or one day in advance.
  • Court reservations are limited to one (1) one-hour per person per day. Reservations are for one hour and begin on the hour.
  • Individuals who neglect to check in at least ten (10) minutes of the reserved time will forfeit their remaining reservation.
  • Users unable to keep a reservation can help to better serve all users by calling 742-1995 to cancel.

Open Recreation Activity

  • Badminton: Friday 6:00pm through Sunday closing. (Hours dependent upon other scheduled events)
  • Basketball: Daily during recreation hours.
  • Pickleball: Available upon request (and court availability) on Basketball Court 3.
  • Racquetball: Daily during recreation hours.
  • Rappelling: Rentals and workshops available. Requests should be made to the Outdoor Pursuits Center.
  • Rock Climbing: Check hours posted at the climbing wall.
  • Sauna: Daily during recreation hours. These dry saunas are located in the main locker rooms.
  • Volleyball: Daily during recreation hours on Court 8 .
  • Wallyball: Daily during recreation hours on Racquetball Court 10.
  • Weight Training: Daily during recreation hours.

Equipment Check Out

  • Users must present their ID at the Equipment Issue area to check out and return equipment.
  • Equipment to be used by guests must be checked out by the sponsoring member. University-sponsored guests may check out equipment by surrendering a driver’s license or other photo ID.
  • Users are responsible for equipment they check out. An individual who fails to return checked out equipment or who returns damaged equipment must pay to replace the lost, stolen, or damaged equipment. If a patron plans to transfer equipment to another member, both patrons must report to Equipment Issue to record the switch.
  • Payment for lost, stolen, or damaged equipment may be made in the Rec Sports Office, Room 202 Student Rec Center. The user’s ID card and/or ID number will be held until restitution is made.
  • Children may NOT check out equipment.

Aquatic Center/Leisure Pool Policies

General Guidelines

  • All general Recreational Sports Entry Policies must be adhered to for entry into the Leisure Pool/Aquatic Center. Please click here for general entry guidelines.
  • No one will be allowed to swim without a lifeguard on duty.
  • Patrons must be prepared to present proper Texas Tech identification. Guests must arrive with an appropriate sponsor and present a government ID or be a member of a rental group with a scheduled pool rental.
  • Lifeguard instructions must be followed at all times.
  • Swimmers under 16 must be supervised by a parent or guardian (at least 17 years of age) at all times.
  • A parent or guardian must be within arm’s reach at all times of any swimmer in a lifejacket.
  • Children may enter the Aquatic Center during non-family hours as spectators only. They may not be in or around the water and must have a parent or guardian within reach at all times.
  • Lifeguards have the discretionary authority to require a parent or guardian to be in the water with any child they judge to be a weak swimmer.
  • Only US Coast Guard approved lifejackets are allowed.
  • All outside flotation devices (e.g. water wings, sewn in swim suit floats, and noodles) are not allowed.
  • Tobacco products are not allowed in the facility. You must be at least 20 feet outside the facility to use any tobacco related product.
  • No splash dives, flips, back dives or backward jumps off the side of the pool.
  • Lap swimmers may be required to circle swim when lane use exceeds two patrons.
  • Lap swimming equipment is available near the lap lanes. All other equipment (e.g. basketballs, volleyballs and goggles) can be issued with proper identification at Equipment Issue.
  • An area may be closed or have restricted use due to competitive events, special events, programs or rentals.
  • Personal items are to be stored safely in the lockers. Do not ask lifeguards to keep your personal items or valuables. There are lockers available for purchase. The Student Recreation Center is not responsible for any lost belongings.
  • Lifeguards have the responsibility to enforce regulations and have the authority to remove anyone for unsafe or inappropriate behavior.
  • Any member of the University Community may not use recreation facilities for personal gain. Private instruction is restricted to approved programs and rental groups.

Health Rules

  • Admission to a pool or spa will be refused to anyone appearing to have a contagious or infectious condition, such as a cold, athlete’s foot, ring worm, boils or other skin infection.
  • No Band-aids or casts may be worn into the pools.
  • Spitting, blowing the nose or urinating in the pools is forbidden.
  • Texas State Health Code requires that only those with swimsuits may enter the water.
  • Only clean, appropriate attire designed for swimming is permitted. For females, appropriate swimwear is that which covers the breasts, buttocks, genitals and the pubic region. For males, appropriate swimwear is that which covers the buttocks, genitals and the pubic region. Specifically, street clothes, thongs and see-through swimwear are prohibited.
  • Cotton will not be allowed in the pools.
  • Clean aqua socks may be worn into the pools.
  • Do not swim when you have diarrhea. This is especially important for children in diapers.
  • Do not swallow or place any pool water in your mouths.
  • Practice good hygiene. Take a shower before swimming and wash your hands after using the toilet or changing diapers.
  • Take children on bathroom breaks or check diapers often.
  • Please change diapers in a bathroom and not at poolside. Germs can spread to surfaces and objects in and around the pool and spread illness.
  • Young children, infants and others not in control of bodily functions must wear plastic pants or swim diapers designed specifically for pool use. Swim diapers are sold at Equipment Issue.

Safety Rules

  • A long whistle blast may signal an emergency. Exit the pool immediately and look to the lifeguard for further instruction.
  • Do not converse with or distract the lifeguards while they are actively engaged in their duties.
  • Patrons under the influence of alcohol or other drugs that alter awareness are restricted from the facilities.
  • You may be asked by a lifeguard to show an ability to swim before using the pool or pool equipment.
  • Glass is prohibited at the pool. Eyeglasses worn into the water should be worn with a safety strap.
  • Headfirst entries are restricted to areas with a minimum water depth of 7 feet.
  • Do not hang on lane ropes, safety lines, volleyball net/cable and basketball goal.
  • Horseplay is not tolerated. Running, pushing, dunking, water fighting, chicken fights, etc, are dangerous and are prohibited.
  • Hyperventilation or the holding of one’s breath underwater for an extended period of time can be extremely dangerous and is prohibited.
  • Use of mask, snorkel and fins is restricted to commercial quality equipment. The mask must be well fitted and have tempered safety glass.
  • All training and fitness equipment is to be used in the manner for which it was designed.
  • Fitness equipment is not allowed in the lazy river.

Water Slide Rules

  • Riders must enter the slide in a sitting position. Do not pull or propel yourself into the ride.
  • Riders must lie on their backs with arms crossed across their chest at all times. No running, standing kneeling, rotating, tumbling or stopping in the flume. Arms and hands must remain in the proper position until hitting the water.
  • Only one rider at a time. All riders must be at least 48” tall.
  • Use is restricted to competent swimmers who can reach the wall unassisted.
  • Maximum rider weight is 300 pounds.
  • Riders may not wear goggles or masks while going off the slide.
  • No tubes, mats or life jackets are permitted on the slide.
  • Riders must be in good health. Those suffering from heart disease, high blood pressure, epilepsy or persons using prescription medication should consult their physician before using this slide. Individuals with medical conditions including, but not limited to, pregnancy, heart or back problems should not ride.
  • No diving from the slide.
  • The slide rider assumes all risk of injury due to misuse of the slide or failure to follow these rules.

Diving Area Rules

  • Swimming in the diving well is prohibited when the diving boards are in use, except when a designated safe swimming area has been established by the Aquatics Supervisor.
  • Do not wear goggles, earplugs or contact lenses while diving.
  • Use is restricted to competent unassisted swimmers. Children in lifejackets will not be allowed on the diving board.
  • All jumps and dives are to be in a forward only or backward only direction from a standing position. No reverse (gainer) or inward dives permitted.
  • Only one person may be on the diving board or its ladder at a time.
  • Do not jump or dive until the diver before you reaches the ladder.
  • One spring per dive or jump. Dive or jump straight ahead.
  • Swim directly to the nearest ladder and exit the pool immediately.
  • Any unsafe jumping or diving may result in expulsion from the pool.

Spa Rules

  • Use of the spas is restricted to those ages 17 and older.
  • Pregnant women, elderly persons and those suffering from heart disease, diabetes, or high or low blood pressure should not use the spas without prior medical consultation and the permission of their doctor.
  • Do not use a spa while under the influence of alcohol, tranquilizers, or other drugs that can cause drowsiness or that lower your blood pressure.
  • Observe reasonable time limits (10-15 minutes), then leave the water and cool down before returning for another brief stay.
  • Long exposure may result in nausea, dizziness or fainting.

Intramural Policies

Individuals and teams participating in the intramural program of Texas Tech University imply their acceptance of the rules, regulations and interpretations governing intramural play.

Participants are reminded that their participation is entirely voluntary. The intramural staff assumes no responsibility for injuries received during intramural activities. Any participant receiving injuries during intramural activities will receive first aid treatment as available.

Insurance

Texas Tech offers various insurance programs for the protection of students.  It is advised that all intramural participants have insurance coverage.  Information on student insurance packages may be obtained by contacting the Texas Tech Student Government Association or by contacting the Office of the Ombudsman.

Conduct

All participants are expected to play according to the rules of the Division of Recreational Sports, the intramural rules, and University Regulations. The staff of the Division of Recreational Sports reserves the right to penalize individuals or teams for violation of these rules. Participants who choose to follow unsportsmanlike practices, whether directed toward an opponent or staff member may be ejected from that contest. The ejection may be administered by a contest official, a contest supervisor or a member of the Recreational Sports staff. Examples of unsportsmanlike conduct which may result in ejection include verbal abuse, excessive technical fouls, flagrant actions toward an opponent, flagrant actions toward an official or staff member, and fighting or inciting a fight. Alcohol use and possession is a direct violation of Rec Sports policies and Code of Student Conduct (part. IX. Sec. b). Rec Sports also reserves the right to refuse participation to any player that is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Further, any participant who physically abuses an official or staff member shall have their case reviewed by professional staff of the Division of Recreational Sports to determine penalties assessed and may then have their case referred to the Judicial Officer of the Office of Campus Life for possible action. The minimum suspension for such an infraction shall normally be one calendar year from the incident and the participant must make written appeal for reinstatement after this time period.

Team Sportsmanship Rating System

In order to promote good sportsmanship the Intramural Program has adopted a sportsmanship policy. It is the responsibility of the team and players to make sure the game atmosphere is friendly and fun to both staff and fellow participants. The sportsmanship rating will be determined by game officials and will include behavior before, during and after each contest. Each team will receive a letter grade after each game. A yellow/red card will be displayed during contests to warn and/or eject individuals, teams or spectators. Ejections occur when an individual receives 2 yellow cards or 1 red card. Please see “Reinstatement Procedures” for ejected individuals.

YELLOW card infractions include, but are not limited to:

  • Verbal and non-verbal dissent towards officials
  • Taunting opponents or staff
  • Actions detrimental to the spirit of the game
  • Unnecessary contact with opponent

RED card infractions include, but are not limited to:

  • - Excessive verbal and non-verbal dissent towards officials
  • - Threats towards staff or opponents
  • - Fighting
  • - Second yellow offense on same player

Sportsmanship ratings will be based on the following criteria:

  • A = Excellent conduct and sportsmanship. Players cooperate with officials and team members. The captain calmly converses with officials and has full control of his/her team. (4 points)
  • B = Acceptable conduct and sportsmanship. Team members show minor dissent that may or may not merit a warning. Team captain exhibits some control over his/her team. Teams that earn 1 yellow card will receive no higher than a B rating. (3 points)
  • C = Below average conduct and sportsmanship. Team shows verbal dissent towards officials or opposing team that may or may not merit a warning. Team captain exhibits minor control over his/her team. Teams that earn 2 yellow or 1 red card will receive no higher than a C rating. (2 points)
  • D = Poor conduct and sportsmanship. Team constantly shows dissent. Multiple instances of poor sportsmanship toward officials and/or opposing team or actions that inflame or provoke. Team captain has little control over his/her team. (1 point) Teams or team members using false identification will receive no higher than a D Rating. A team that attempts to check in a player using false identification will be considered to have 2 card infractions to begin the contest.
  • F = Unacceptable conduct and sportsmanship. Team completely uncooperative. Team captain has no control over team. Any team earning 3 card infractions or 2 red cards will receive an F rating. Any team with players, or spectators, in possession or under the influence of alcohol will receive an F rating. (0 points)

Any team receiving an F rating will be suspended from further play until meeting with and being reinstated by the Sports Director.

Special Circumstances

Captain’s Meeting

Teams that attend a sport’s Captain’s meeting will receive 1 point toward their overall sportsmanship rating goal for playoff eligibility.

Playoff Eligibility

In order for a team to be eligible for post-season play they must earn an average of 3 points per game scheduled in the regular season. (eg. For a 3 game season a team must earn 9 points to advance to the playoffs)

Once in the playoffs teams must receive at least a C rating for each game played in order to advance. Teams may only receive 1 C rating in the playoffs. Additional Ratings C or below will result in removal from the playoffs. Teams that receive either a D or F rating during the playoffs will not be permitted to continue play. Teams that win by a “not ready to play “Forfeit will receive an A rating or 4 points.

Teams losing by a “not ready to play” Forfeit will receive a C rating or 2 points. Teams losing by Default will receive a B rating or 3 points.

Appeals

The sportsmanship rating a team receives may not be appealed.

General Responsibility

The intramural staff of the Division of Recreational Sports shall have the general responsibility to administer the intramural sports program. The intramural staff shall have the power make decisions on any point not specifically covered within these policies and regulations, or in the rules of a sport. All decisions made by intramural staff shall be final.

Eligibility

All eligibility will refer to Texas Tech University, Lubbock campus.

General Eligibility

  • Undergraduate Students. Undergraduate students who are enrolled in the University for one (1) or more hours, classes held at the Lubbock campus, are eligible to compete in the intramural sports program. Note – Individuals who purchase an Adjunct Membership are not eligible for intramural sports, nor are individuals who are enrolled solely in Distance Learning. Recent graduates (not enrolled) who purchase a Rec Pass are not eligible.
  • Graduate Students. Graduate students who are enrolled in the University for one (1) or more hours, classes held at the Lubbock campus, and have paid the Rec Sports fee are eligible to compete in the intramural sports program. Graduate students who have waived fees may become eligible by purchasing a Semester or Annual Use Permit. (Rec Center Pass)
  • Faculty and Staff Members.Faculty and staff members who purchase a Semester or Annual Use Permit (Rec Sports Pass) are eligible to compete in the intramural sports program. Note – Individuals who purchase an Adjunct Membership are not eligible for intramural sports. Staff members = Benefits eligible employees.
  • Spouses.Student, faculty and staff spouses who purchase a Semester or Annual Use Permit (Rec Sports Pass) are eligible to compete in Co-Rec offerings of the intramural sports program.

Eligibility Restrictions and Exceptions

  • Team Limitations. A player may represent only one team in any sport in a given season. A person may also represent one Co-Rec team in any sport in any season. A player in violation of this restriction becomes an ineligible player.
  • Assumed Names. No player may compete in an intramural event under any name other than his or her own.  Players in violation will immediately become ineligible players in any intramural activity until reinstated by the Division of Recreational Sports.
  • Persons Ejected/Removed from Intramural Contests.Players, coaches or spectators removed from an intramural contest are ineligible to compete in any intramural activity until reinstated by the Division of Recreational Sports.
  • Intercollegiate Athletes and Former Intercollegiate Athletes.

    An individual is considered an intercollegiate athlete if they appear on the roster of an NCAA Division 1 (or Bowl Eligible, or FBS) institution.   This may be on the Varsity, Junior Varsity, or Reserve team, or in any way listed by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at a Division 1 institution (for football an “FBS” institution.)   Any player whose name appears on the athletic roster after the first intercollegiate game in that sport shall be considered as being on the roster for that academic year.  These individuals shall be ineligible to compete in that particular sport (or an intramural related sport) for a period equal to the number of years they are considered intercollegiate athletes or a maximum of two years after their final year as an intercollegiate athlete. Intercollegiate athletes are considered to be part of an athletic program for the entire academic year that they are listed on an intercollegiate roster.  Individuals who play at institutions below the Division 1 level are not considered to be intercollegiate athletes for intramural sports.
    An example:  A former D1 soccer player plays for their team (1 Year) in the academic ’09 Fall / ’10 Spring year.  They would have to sit the remainder of the ’09 Spring year, and the ’10 Fall / ‘11 Spring academic year and would be then eligible in the ’11 Fall / ’12 Spring academic year.  If they had played for 2+ years they would have to sit 2 academic years and would be eligible in ’12 Fall / ’13 Spring. 

Intercollegiate Athletics and Related Intramural Sports.

An athlete who is an intercollegiate athlete may not participate in the following “related sports” of the intramural sports program. All variations of men, women, and co-rec sports are included.

  • 1. Intercollegiate football players may not participate in intramural sports in the sports of flag football or 4on4 football.
  • 2. Intercollegiate baseball players may not participate in the intramural sports of softball or baseball.
  • 3. Intercollegiate softball players may not participate in the intramural sports of softball or baseball.
  • 4. Intercollegiate soccer players may not participate in the intramural sports of soccer or indoor soccer.
  • 5. Intercollegiate swimmers may not participate in intramural swimming.
  • 6. Intercollegiate basketball players may not participate in the intramural sports of basketball or 3on3 basketball.
  • 7. Intercollegiate Track and Field or Cross Country athletes may not participate in the intramural Track or Cross Country events.
  • 8. Intercollegiate Volleyball players may not participate in the intramural sports of volleyball or sand volleyball.
  • 9. Intercollegiate athletes in individual sports may not participate in the corresponding intramural derivative sport (eg. Golf scramble, tennis doubles, team bowling, etc.)

Any intercollegiate athlete should check with the professional staff of the Division of Recreational Sports for a ruling concerning any sport not outlined or for additional sports added to the intramural calendar.

Sport Clubs

In accordance with the Sport Club Officers Handbook.  No Intramural team, in their related sport, shall have more than two (2) club sport members on its roster.  All restrictions include Men’s, Women’s and Co-Rec divisions.  All Co-Rec teams consisting of club sport members must be entered in the competitive division.  

Professional Athletes.

Any athlete who would be ineligible for varsity or extramural competition because of professionalism is prohibited from competing in that sport (or related sport) for a period of 5 calendar years from their last professional competition.

Division Eligibility

If all other eligibility requirements are met, eligibility for divisions shall be:

  • Greek. Undergraduates in Greek social organiations registered by the Center for Campus Life and recognized by the Inter-Fraternity Council and Panhellenic Council may compete in the Greek Division. A representative’s name must appear on the official membership list in the Center for Campus Life.
  • Residence Hall. Persons who are residents of University operated Residence Halls may compete in the Residence Hall Division.
  • Open. All students, faculty and staff may compete in the Open Division. For Open Division sports, if entries are sufficient, there will be a separate subdivision for women that will be open to women only.
  • Co-Rec. All students, faculty, staff and spouses may compete in the Co-Rec Division.

Ineligible Players

Teams may not play ineligible players even by mutual agreement of both team captains and other players in the contest. Such players shall be ineligible for all competition until reinstated.

The intramural staff may forfeit any contest immediately upon discovery of ineligible participant(s). Further, a team that has been notified of an ineligible player by the intramural staff and continues to use such player may immediately be dropped from further competition for the remainder of that sport. During league play and playoffs, all contests in which an ineligible player participated shall be recorded as a forfeit win for the opposing team. Teams using illegal players are subject to being dropped from league competition upon discovery of such act.

Reinstatement Procedures for Ineligible Players

Participants who choose to follow unsportsmanlike practices and are ejected from a contest are ineligible to participate in any intramural activity pending official reinstatement.

The guidelines, which apply to reinstatement, are as follows:

  • No individual will be reinstated prior to a personal meeting with an intramural staff member to discuss the eligibility question or situation.
  • It is the responsibility of the player(s) to contact the intramural staff and to resolve the situation.
  • Intramural office hours are normally 8:00am – 5:00pm Monday through Friday.
  • For best results, appointments should be made with the intramural staff. (742-3351)
  • The period of suspension shall be determined from the result of the meeting with the player(s) and the intramural staff member. The minimum suspension for an unsportsmanlike ejection shall be one intramural contest.

Protests

There are two ways that protests may arise.  Protests may be filed on the use of an ineligible player or when interpretation of the rules is incorrect.  Under no circumstances will the judgment of an official be grounds for protest.   Further, since there are various intramural venues and leagues, no protest involving fields, courts or play space will be accepted.  In any instance relative to protest, if the contest officials and the supervisory staff can resolve incidents relative to the protest, this shall be done.

Protests involving player eligibility

Protests on eligibility must be written and turned in to the intramural office. The protest must contain complete information including the name of the individual being protested and the reason the protest is being lodged. The protest should contain complete information including the date and time of the contest, the names of the opposing teams and any information that is relevant to the protest. Protests must be specific to an individual(s).

  • Regular Season League Play. All eligibility protests should be filed within 24 hours of the contest in question and must be filed within 24 hours of the final regular season contest for the team in question. Protests filed after this time will be accepted for playoff consideration but will not affect any regular season league contest.
  • Playoffs. During playoffs, opposing teams have until the next game played to file a protest. If it is the final program contest, no protest shall be accepted after one business day from the conclusion of the contest.

Protests involving interpretation of the rules

No protest will be considered unless it is first registered with the official(s) in charge of the contest at the time the prompting incident occurs.  The intramural staff will not consider any protest involving rule interpretation or application that is not lodged with the contest officials at the time of the incident.

All protests must be submitted to the intramural sports office, in writing, by the close of the next business day following the contest in question.  All information relevant to the contest must be contained including information about the game, timing, teams involved and so forth.  The protest should specify the rule under which the protest is being made, the official’s decision and all other pertinent facts.

A copy of the protest will be available to the captain of the opposing team.

During the course of lodging the protest, it is the responsibility of the team protesting to insure that scorekeepers and game officials record all relevant information on the score sheet at the time of the protest.

Contests in which a protest is sustained will be replayed from the exact point of the protest providing that all information is available.  If not, the game will be replayed from the nearest preceding division of the contest.

Postponements, Forfeits and Defaults

Postponements

If time and space are available the intramural staff may agree to the postponement of an intramural contest. For a contest to be officially postponed both teams must agree and sign a request for postponement. This form must be completed and signed by both teams at least one day prior to the originally scheduled contest. For a contest on Sunday or Monday, the form will be accepted no later than noon on the Friday before the contest. A request for postponement form may be secured from the intramural office.

It is the responsibility of the postponing team to contact the opponent and arrange a mutually convenient time. During the regular season league play, no game may be postponed beyond the date of the final program game. During playoffs, all postponed games must be played prior to the following scheduled contest.

Forfeit – Not Ready to Play

Ready to Play: Game time is forfeit time. "Ready to play" means that a team must be on the playing area, ready to play, with the minimum number of players as listed in the sport rules. The line-up must be recorded on the official scorecard. The team must be able to respond immediately to the begin play order of the official.

Claiming a Win by Forfeit: In all sports, the team present and "ready to play" at the time the game is scheduled to start, may claim a win by forfeit by recording their lineup, and stating "forfeit" on the official scorecard. The intramural sports staff will assist the captains with this process. Forfeited contests will not be rescheduled.

A team that forfeits two contests, by not being ready to play, in a sport will automatically be dropped from further play. Their remaining contests shall be entered as wins for their opponents.

Forfeit – Rule Violation

A team that forfeits a contest due to rule violation or player eligibility will receive a loss for that contest and may be dropped from league competition after review of the incident.

General Information

General Duties of the Team Captain

Each organization should have an intramural team captain. The method by which this captain is selected is entirely up to the organization. This individual should serve as a liaison between the organization and the intramural sports staff. The captain is a vital link to the success of an organization.

Some duties of the captain include:

  • Representing the organization at all captain’s meetings.
  • Insuring that all players are eligible to compete. This includes coming in to the intramural sports office and verifying playoff rosters.
  • Making sure that all entries are submitted and that all information on the entry form is complete and accurate.
  • Keeping the team members informed of the time and location of scheduled activities.
  • Insuring that those individuals representing the organization conduct themselves in an appropriate and acceptable manner.
  • Providing extra personnel such as scorers and timers when necessary.
  • Being familiar with the rules of the sport and the regulations of intramural sports.

Playoffs

For men’s and women’s team sports, if time and space allow, a playoff following the regular season will be held. In the co-rec divisions, if time and space allow a playoff will be held in the co-rec competitive division. All teams who complete the regular season, and have achieved an appropriate overall sportsmanship rating, will be placed in a playoff based on their regular season record.

In large divisions, the playoffs are normally split into Divisions based on record. Teams with the better won/loss record in league play would advance to one bracket and teams with the poorer won/loss record would advance to another bracket. Teams wishing to be placed in a particular bracket, if applicable, should contact the program administrator for that sport immediately upon conclusion of their regular season. Requests may not be able to be honored. Once play has begun in a playoff bracket, no teams will be allowed to change from their bracket.

Playoff Rosters.

To participate in the playoffs for any team an individual must meet all intramural eligibility rules and must be included on the game sheet. It is the duty of the team captain to check their roster and bring forth any questions/concerns/additions to the intramural staff. Captains may come to the intramural office between 8am-5pm Monday through Friday to check their rosters and resolve any player questions. Players may be “added” to a roster at a playoff contest. All questions concerning playoff rosters should be cleared during business hours prior to the contest being held. Official rulings are made by the professional staff of the intramural sports department.

Team Names

Team names are subject to the approval of the intramural staff. Any names deemed inappropriate will not be permitted.

Forfeit Fees

For some team sports there is a standard forfeit fee that must be paid at the time of entry.  No entry will be accepted unless payment accompanies the official entry form.  All entry forms and forfeit fees must be submitted to the intramural office on or before the stated deadlines.

The standard forfeit fee is $50.00 per team entered into most team sports.  A $25.00 fee will be charged for each forfeit.  Teams that do not show up with the minimum number of players or teams that participate with players not eligible for intramurals are subject to the $25 fee loss.  After Two (2) Not-Ready to play forfeits, the team shall be dropped from further competition.

For those teams who complete the season with forfeit fees remaining, the fee will be refunded at the conclusion of the semester or year through Student Business Services.  The fee may be applied to other intramural sport entries.

Fitness and Wellness

Massage Therapy Policies

  • Massage sessions are by appointment only, unless otherwise approved by the massage therapist on duty
  • All appointments are made in the Fitness/Wellness Center or by calling 742-3828 (Appointments by phone MUST pay with a credit card)
  • Payment must be made when scheduling appointment
  • All appointments must be made at least two days or 48 hours in advance, unless otherwise approved by the massage therapist on duty
  • Please arrive 15 (10 for returning clients) minutes before your scheduled session in order to receive a full massage
  • Therapist has right to cancel any appointment if client is 20 or more minutes past the massage start time.
  • A 48-Hour cancellation/reschedule notice is required
  • Refunds are not guaranteed and are subject to a 10% processing fee.
  • Receipt must be presented upon request of refund.
  • Massage punch card must be punched on the day and time of appointment and expires one year after the date of the first appointment.

Other important information:

  • Techniques to be used may include Swedish, Deep Tissue, Trigger Point, Hot Stone, Reflexology, Joint Range of motion techniques and stretches
  • Body parts to be massaged include the face, neck, shoulders, back, arms, buttocks, hip flexors, legs (front and back), pectorals, abdominals, ribs, and feet.
  • The massage therapist WILL NOT engage in breast massage.
  • Genitals are always EXCLUDED.
  • Standard draping will be used, meaning only the body part being massaged will be exposed

Personal Training Policies

  • To sign up with a trainer, you must register in the Fitness/Wellness Center. Once you register, your trainer will contact you via email or phone within 2-3 days.
  • There are no penalties if session cancellations are made at least 24 hours in advance for personal training session, fitness assessment or body composition appointments. You may contact your trainer directly or call 742-3828 to cancel your appointment. Failure to show up to a scheduled appointment or tardiness of 10 minutes or more will result in forfeiture of one appointment or session.
  • All sessions must be used during the semester in which they were purchased. Exceptions are made only for medical reasons or for those purchasing a 24-Sessions Package or 32-Sessions Package. To request an exception you must contact Kami White-Waden, 742-3828. All unused sessions will be forfeited.
  • Remember to bring a towel to each training session.

RaiderX and X2 Policies

  • RaiderX classes are offered to all eligible Rec members for free.
  • Children under 12 are not allowed in any classes.
  • Children ages 12-16 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian who is a Rec member.
  • Please arrive on time, doors open 10 minutes before class begins...class size is limited until all equipment is full.
  • Entrance after 10 minutes of the start of class will not be allowed due to missing the warm-up.
  • Please wear athletic attire when attending fitness classes.
  • Come prepared to have fun!
  • RaiderX2 classes are offered to all eligible Rec Center members for a minimal charge.
  • Pre-registration and payment is in the Fitness/Wellness Center.
  • NO REFUNDS WILL BE GIVEN.
  • There is a $2 transfer fee to switch classes (plus any additional cost of the class).
  • $5 daily passes are also available to try classes out in the Fitness/Wellness Center.
  • Must purchase hand wraps ($6) for Boxing Techniques classes.
  • Heart Rate straps ($8) are available for purchase for Spin classes.
  • All purchases will be made in the Fitness/Wellness Center.
  • Spin and Mind/Body PASS is nonrefundable, replaceable, or transferrable.
  • Come with a positive attitude, open mind, and a smile on your face!
