Blanca Peak Mountaineering
Blanca Peak in Colorado stands more than 14,000 ft tall. This trip is very strenuous but greatly rewarding. You will hike to our base camp, and then go through an introductory snow school course where you will learn technical mountaineering skills. These skills include, how to use an ice axe, crampons, self-belay, self-arrest, and how to set up rope teams. We will then have a chance to summit Blanca Peak depending on the weather that day.

How to pack for a backpacking trip, pack fitting, backcountry cooking, Leave No Trace techniques, staying warm, water purification, Crampon techniques, Ice axe positions, Self-Arrest and Self-Belay techniques etc.
Prior backpacking or mountain travel experience preferred. No prior crampon or ice axe use required.
Physically, this trip is very tough because of the distance hiked with 40+ pounds in your backpack and the significant elevation gain and loss (e.g. gain 4,000ft over 8 miles on the first day; total elevation gain and loss is ~12,000ft for the trip). The terrain will be steep and covered with snow. We’ll be camping on snow and it will be below freezing at night. For reaching the summit, we’ll be traveling together on roped teams using crampons and mountaineering ice axes.
