- Any student entering a Texas public college or university is required to
test in a TSI approved test if he/she cannot provide documentation of an
exemption from testing
- Implemented by the state to ensure students enrolling in public higher
education institutions possess the necessary academic skills in reading,
writing, and math to succeed

college level class exemption
- HS Dual Credit can be based upon 10th Grade TAKS but
students must submit 11th grade exempting TAKS scores
before registration as a regular college student

Guard, or Reserves after August 1, 1990

subject areas may be exempt from a TSI area by achieving a “C” or better

- THEA is offered at testing sites statewide
- Students may go to www.thea.nesinc.com to register or to take a
practice test
- Accuplacer, Compass, Asset tests can be taken at any Public College or University that
offers these tests
- Before testing at another college or university, students must verify
that the school is willing to issue the student an official score
report that they can submit to
Tech or is willing to fax a score report directly to Tech.
- Some schools are not willing to share results if the student does not
attend their institution
- Out-of-state students must make sure they test in the proper areas of
each test
- Students may call Tech’s TSI Compliance Office to verify this
information

- Students may take the Accuplacer test in Room 214, West Hall any working
weekday
- Students may also test on Sundays prior to ORNT check-in if their
orientation starts on Sunday although we encourage students to test
early
- Students must arrive in the testing center before 1pm
- Students will need a picture ID such as a valid driver’s license or
passport
- Exam cost is currently $50.00 and is payable to Texas Tech by check,
money order, Visa or MasterCard
- After testing, students must submit test scores to the TSI Compliance
Office, Room 116, West Hall

- Students who are not TSI exempt or waived and who test in a TSI Approved
Test but fail all or a portion of the test are required by Texas Law to
obtain TSI Advising and to enroll in a formal program of skills
development each semester. The
student must remain in a developmental class each semester until the
student either retests and passes all sections of a TSI Approved Test or
completes the required developmental course sequence of classes with a
grade of “C” or better.
