TSI Exemptions

The following students may be exempt:

  1. Students who have previously earned a Baccalaureate degree from another Texas Public institution of higher education (college transcript needed).
  2. Students who have previously earned a Associates degree from a Texas Public institution of higher education (college transcript needed).
  3. Students who have achieved high test scores on one of the following:

  4. Students seeking entry into teacher education certification programs may be exempted only on the basis of high test scores.
  5. Transfer students who have satisfied TSI requirements at another Texas public institution of higher education must provide documentation of an exemption or completion of developmental coursework. If you have taken a TSI approved alternate test, documentation must be provided to the TSI Compliance Office prior to enrollment.
  6. Students who have served in the military (on or after August 1, 1990) and were honorably discharged, retired, or released from active duty as a member of the armed forces of the U.S., the Texas National Guard, or a member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the U.S. (Copy of DD214 enclosed).
  7. Students currently serving on active military as a member of the armed forces of the U.S. or the Texas National Guard, or are currently serving and have been serving for at least 3 years prior to enrollment as a member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the U.S. (Letter from Commanding Officer required).
  8. Students transferring in courses from an accredited private or out-of-state institution of higher education who have achieved a "C" or better in each of the TSI subject areas in the following courses:
    Writing: Any college-level writing course
    Reading: Any college-level history or political science (government) course
    Math: Any college-level Math course
    (College transcript(s) needed)
  9. TAKS Exemptions - beginning with 2005 High School Graduates: A minimum of 2200 on the mathematics section and/or a minimum of 2200 with a writing subscore of at least 3 in the English/Language Arts section of theEXIT-LEVEL exam. The exemption will be given for those corresponding sections only (i.e. you score a 2313 with a 4 sub-score on the English/Language Arts section and a 2199 on the Math section - you would be exempt from the Reading and Writing sections of the TSI). Scores are only valid for 3 years.
