The IGCAST Phytotron was built in 2019 as part of a larger effort to increase quality research capabilities in the State of Texas.
The Phytotron consists of three greenhouses with a total of 2,340 ft2 of growing space and five Conviron© growth chambers, as well as:
  • Argus Controls Titan 900v© with a wide range of climate settings.
  • Heliospectra© ELIXIA light fixtures controlled by the helioCORETM control system. Lighting strategies are fully customizable for four wavelengths: red, blue, far-red and white.
  • Four Complex growth chambers with walk-in style chambers and multiple growing configurations.
  • MTPS Series Plant Growth Room with Flex Option

Big issues need big solutions. IGCAST researchers are working to mitigate the effects of climate change by developing crops that can withstand high heat and drought conditions.

From genome to phenome, scientists are using cutting-edge genomics tools to improve crop productivity under adverse conditions while simultaneously improving nutritional value and fiber quality.

The five laboratories housed within IGCAST focus on a variety of research, including:

  • Designing strategies to integrate epigenetic changes in plant breeding.
  • Developing technologies, materials and processes to use bioengineering approaches for food production from carbon dioxide.
  • Using genomics approaches to obtain a deeper understanding of the genetic diversity and regulatory mechanisms of important agronomical traits.
