Welcome to the Mind/Body Lab

Mind/Body Lab Schedule

Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm

Many of us feel stress in our day to day lives. For students, though, stress levels can reach new, all-time highs. From managing our own schedules to developing new social relationships, academics can often take a backseat to the pressures we are feeling. If we are able to better recognize our early warning signs when we are stressed, we can use simple techniques to begin to reverse those overwhelming emotions.

Biofeedback is one tool the counselors at the Student Counseling Center can use to teach you how to manage your stress better. We can’t eliminate your stress, but we can teach you how to detect stress signals sooner so you can do something about it.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is simply a tool in which you can receive immediate visual feedback about what your biological systems are doing. For example, our software can show you what your heart is doing and how basic changes in your breathing can influence your heart beat.

Studies show that a specific heart rate pattern correlates highly with a relaxed state. At the Student Counseling Center, we can teach you how to physically ‘put the breaks’ on your stress and achieve this desired sense of calm.

How does Biofeedback work?

We use various software programs to graph your heart rate and measure how well your heart and lungs are working together. Once students can master new breathing techniques that help their heart and lungs synchronize, they use these skills in graphically-enhanced computer video games to accomplish challenges. There is a game for everyone, from shooting a bow and arrow by controlling your heart beat to driving a race car while keeping yourself calm.

What can Biofeedback help with?

Biofeedback can be used to help with a variety of conditions. At the Student Counseling Center, we are able to focus specifically on college concerns, including:
