Resolution Honoring the Athletic Program

Passed unanimously by the Faculty Senate on February 8, 2006

 

WHEREAS the student-athletes of Texas Tech University, aided by their coaches and support staff, recorded a number of outstanding performances during the 2005 calendar year, both on the field and off; and

 

WHEREAS the Red Raider football squad earned a bid to the AT&T Cotton Bowl, one of the oldest and most prestigious bowl games, and Coach Mike Leach and his players received nationwide attention via a cover story in the New York Times Magazine; and

 

WHEREAS the men's and women's basketball teams each made the "Sweet 16" round of their respective NCAA national tournaments, and Red Raider Ronald Ross won the Chip Hilton Award and Lady Raider Erin Grant was among the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar honorees; and 

 

WHEREAS the men's tennis team also made the Sweet 16 of its NCAA tournament; and

 

WHEREAS the men's track and field squad won the Big XII team championship, 10 male and female athletes achieved All-America status at the NCAA meet, and men's runner Andrae Williams (representing the Bahamas) won a silver medal at the World Championships in Helsinki, Finland, in the 4 X 400 relay; and

 

WHEREAS the men's and women's cross-country and golf teams qualified for regional play in their respective sports; and

 

WHEREAS numerous TTU student-athletes received academic honors such as Big XII and District VI (New Mexico, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas) All-Academic;

 

BE IT RESOLVED that the Faculty Senate meeting this day, February 8th, 2006 congratulates the coaches, staffs, and especially the student-athletes comprising the aforementioned squads.
