
Essay or Poetry Contest
We’ve given you the story . . . now we want you to make it your own by entering the Summer Reading Essay or Poetry Contest. Consider your reactions to the book, The Devil’s Highway: A True Story, when writing about your thoughts, experiences, agreements, disagreements, and/or points of growth after reading about the journey of the Wellton 26/Yuma 14.
Essay & Poetry Contest Guidelines:

We invite all new students to participate in the Summer Reading Essay or Poetry Contest.

Contest Prizes include:
o Participants will be invited to have lunch or dinner
with Luis Alberto Urrea, author of The Devil’s
Highway: A True Story.
o 1st place - TBA
o 2nd place - TBA
o 3rd place - TBA

Submit an essay or poem about your reactions to The Devil’s Highway: A True Story. The form of the submission is open. For example, it could be a personal reflection or a critical review of the book.

The contest is open to all new students enrolled at Texas Tech University.

The essay should be from 1000 to 1500 words in length. The poem should be, at minimum, 150 words in length.

The student’s name should NOT appear on the essay or poem. Attach a separate page with name and contact information.

OR
As a paper copy, accompanied by an electronic version saved to a clearly labeled disk. Mail these items, together with contact information, to:

Entries must be received by September 22, 2008. You will receive a confirmation email from Zach Manning, indicating that your essay has been received. If you do not receive a message, please email Zach Manning at zach.manning@ttu.edu.

The entries will be judged by a committee of faculty, staff, and students. The winners will be notified by mail, phone, or email by October 10, 2008.

Each entry submitted may be published on the Summer Reading Program Web site and/or in the Daily Toreador.
