Tech Savvy 2019: February 23, 2019!

2018 Tech Savvy Flyer

Tech Savvy is a one-day STEM Conference designed for girls 6th through 8th grade and their parents. The program's purpose is to help young girls discover realistic STEM careers and pathways to education, and equip parents to be an encouraging and reinforcing part of the process. All parents are encouraged to attend, however, if the students want to come with their friends, or a teacher, that's great, too!

During registration, students will be able to select their top choices for workshops. Any adult attending with the student will be participating in the adult program, and will also need to register. Parents not participating in the adult program should plan on waiting with their student until they are checked in. Parents can meet their students for pickup in the same (drop-off) location at the end of the program. Parents dropping off their students do not need to register or pay.

Registration Information

Because of limitations of our system, only 1 student (and 1 adult, if desired) can be registered at a time. If you are registering more than 1 student, you will need to use a different debit/credit card for each student or wait more than 24 hours between registrations. If you would like to use the same payment method for more than 1 student, please email Jessica Spott and coordinate with her.

If you are interested in registering a large group of students for a school, which would require payment through a check, please also email Jessica Spott. Keep in mind payment for all participants MUST be received 2 weeks in advance to avoid being dropped from the registration system.

Workshop Options

Students will be able to select 1 workshop choice for their morning workshop and 1 for their afternoon workshop. Click here to view the Tech Savvy 2019 workshop choices

As space in each workshop is limited, so as each workshop fills up, it will be taken off the registration site. If the morning workshop you are looking for fills up, check in the afternoon and vice versa.

Tech Savvy Location

Tech Savvy Check-in, lunch and closing presentation will be in the Ballroom in the Student Union Building. Students will be escorted by volunteers to and from each workshop. Workshop locations will differ, depending on the track selected.  Parent programming will be held in the TTU Student Union.

Keynote Speaker Information: Dr. Raegan Higgins

Dr. Raegan Higgins

Dr. Higgins has been at Texas Tech since 2008, and is currently an Associate Professor in Mathematics. She earned her BS from Xavier University of Louisiana, and her MS and PhD from University of Nebraska.

Dr. Higgins' current research is in time scales; The calculus of time scales was developed to unity and extend results obtained for differential equations and difference equations. Her interests focus on oscillation criteria for certain linear and nonlinear second order dynamic equations. Dr. Higgins is also interested in applications of time scales to mathematical biology and issues that affect pre-service teachers' ability to teach mathematics. As a WOC, she is committed to the education, training, and mentoring of women in STEM. Dr. Higgins' work with the EDGE (Enhancing Diversity in Graduate Education) Program and the LS-AMP (Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation) Bridges Across Texas grant are allowing her to assist in strengthen the ability of women students to successfully complete undergraduate and graduate programs in the mathematical sciences and to place more women in visible leadership roles in the mathematics community.
