Procedures That Victims Should Follow if a Sexual Offense Occurs

1. Do not bathe, douche, urinate, defecate, change clothes or clean house. By not doing this you will help police services preserve evidence about the offense.

2. Call 9-911 immediately to report the offense to the Texas Tech Police Department and to receive medical treatment. Reporting the offense immediately to the police can increase the chance of apprehension/prosecution.

3. Contact the Student Counseling Center (Rm. 214 West Hall, phone # 742-3674) to obtain support services or other assistance. Other agencies/offices offering assistance can be reached at:

4. The student may contact the Department of Housing and Residence Life (742-2661) to obtain assistance in changing residence, if the student request to do so.

5. The student may contact the Center for Campus Life (742-5433) or the Student Mediation Center (742-1714) to discuss the filing of a complaint, if the offense was committed by another student.

Student Judicial Programs conducts disciplinary hearings in cases of sexual offenses. Policies and procedures concerning disciplinary proceedings are listed in Part IX (Code of Student Conduct) of the Texas Tech University Student Affairs Handbook. The accuser and the accused are entitled to the same opportunities to have others present during the disciplinary proceeding and the accuser may be informed of the outcome of the proceeding concerning the sexual offense, consistent with the provisions of the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974.

A provision was added to the Clery Act in 2000 requiring colleges and universities to include a new statement "advising the campus community where law enforcement agency information provided by a state under sec 170101(j) of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, 42 U.S. Code 14071 (j) concerning registered sex offenders.

Visitors to and members of the Texas Tech Community can access information about sex offenders registered in the state of Texas through the Texas Department of Public Safety, web site. The Texas Department of public Safety web address for viewing registered sex offenders can be accessed at https://records.txdps.state.tx.us/DPS_WEB/Portal/index.aspx.

Notification

All students enrolled in the university will receive notification through electronic mail and student portals featuring the exact website address for the current Campus Crime Report. Hard copies of the website will be available from any department in Student Affairs or the Texas Tech Police Department. Faculty and staff will be notified of the Campus Crime information website electronically through the techANNOUNCE email system.

Postcards will be available to all faculty, staff, and residence hall students in the Student Mediation Center office (250 West Hall) or can be found online at http://www.studentaffairs.ttu.edu/np/Campus_Crime_postcard.pdf .

Parents will receive notification through a Parent Newsletter. An advertisement depicting the postcard information will run in The University Daily for one week. Additional postcards will be available through Personnel and Admissions and School Relations for prospective employees and students.
