Mission Statement

The Office of Student Diversity Relations assists in creating a campus climate that strives to understand and appreciate similarities and differences among individuals. Through recruitment, retention, and marketing, and programs and services offered, Student Diversity Relations leads an effort to create and sustain a sense of community for traditionally underrepresented student populations. In partnership with both campus and community entities and through innovative programs and services Student Diversity Relations contributes to students’ successful learning experience.

About the Director

Sofia Rodriguez has over 10 years of experience in various roles in both the elementary education arena as well as in the higher education arena. Ms. Rodriguez started as a student intern in the Dean of Students office at Texas Tech University, assisting in areas pertaining to diversity and multicultural initiatives. Most recently, Sofia served as the Director of Student Development and the Clark Student Center at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Furthermore, Ms. Rodriguez has served in various administrative roles dealing with issues related to admissions and recruitment, judicial affairs, Greek life, leadership programs, volunteer programming, financial aid, new student orientation, alcohol education, and budgets. Sofia has received numerous awards, including the SWACUHO Diversity Individual Award as nominated by the University Housing Services at Texas Tech. As a student at Texas Tech University Sofia was a McNair Scholar, President of the Hispanic Student Society and served as a senator for the College of Education.

Sofia earned both her Bachelor of Science in Multidisciplinary Studies (1997) and Master of Education (2000) from Texas Tech University. Currently, Ms. Rodriguez is pursing her Ph D in Higher Education in the College of Education at Texas Tech University. Her professional association memberships include the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, Texas Association of College and University Student Personnel Administrators, Association of College Unions International and the Association of Fraternity Advisors.
