Ag. Secretary Tom Vilsack visits TTU
June 14, 2013 | "Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack visited Texas Tech University, where he met with agriculture leaders about the need for Congressional action on a Food, Farm and Jobs Bill, as well as a solution to fix America's broken immigration system. Later in the day, he toured an area farm to view drought impacts and discuss the importance of a strong farm safety net." (USDA) Sign Language interpreters were provided by SDS to allow for communication access by deaf audience members.
SDS Helps Plant at Arbor Day 2013
April 26, 2013 | Student Disability Staff members participated in the campus-wide planting during the annual Arbor Day event -- an event that provides an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to join together to beautify the Tech campus, build a sense of community, and receive recognition. ognition. "Arbor Day is the finale of a week of Tech events to commemorate Strive for Honor Week and Sustainability Week. Mike Quartaro, Tech's director of the Grounds Maintenance department, said 105 student organizations had signed up to plant 26,000 plants." (Lubbock Avalanche Journal)
Mayim Bialik Lectures at SUB
March 28, 2013 | Mayim Bialik, who plays the role of Amy Farrah Fowler on TV's popular "Big Bang Theory", gave a guest lecture at the SUB, encouraging more students to study Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics or STEM. Students were engaged by Mayim's knowledge gleaned from a PhD in Neuroscience and by her acting experience as a beloved, comedic character. Sign Language interpreters were provided for equal access for the deaf and hard of hearing.
TTU Welcomes Kliff Kingsbury
December 14, 2012 | Kliff Kingsbury was formally introduced Dec. 14 as the new head football coach in front of several hundred fans at United Spirit Arena. The press conference was televised on ESPN and was made accessible to deaf and hard of hearing people in the audience via a sign language interpreter.
