General Information
The W. B. Rushing Family Fund Programming Scholarship is awarded annually to a “rising star” member of the Tech Activities Board (TAB) who has contributed time and talent to the group and will continue to do so for the following year.
Scholarship Award
The W. B. Rushing Family Fund Scholarship is awarded each summer for the following academic year. Recipients will receive $350 for the fall semester and $350 for the spring semester as long as they continue to be enrolled in courses at Texas Tech University and a member of the TAB during that academic year.
Applicant Criteria
1. Be a full-time student at Texas Tech University and an active member of TAB.
2. Must have been accepted or planning to seek a position in TAB for the year that the scholarship will be in effect.
3. Must be a TAB General Member; the President, Vice Presidents, and Coordinators may not apply for this scholarship.
4. Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 at time of application for the scholarship and receipt of the scholarship.
5. Must be of sophomore or junior standing during the time period that the scholarship will be in effect.
6. Scholarship is awarded for one (1) year and recipients may not reapply.
Application
To apply for the W. B. Rushing Family Fund Programming Scholarship, students must submit the following:
• The completed application form
• A cover letter of application
• A resume highlighting activities, honors, and awards
• A letter of recommendation from a Texas Tech University faculty or staff member (outside of TAB) familiar with your leadership abilities and academic prowess
Scholarship Selection Criteria
Scholarship recipients will be selected on the basis of the applicant’s service toward the programming ideals of TAB and ability to balance a healthy academic workload. Financial need will be a consideration, but not the overriding determinant.
Scholarship Selection Committee
Representatives from the Student Financial Aid/Scholarship Office, Student Union & Activities, the Center for Campus Life, and other campus representatives comprise the scholarship selection committee. Advisors of TAB are not allowed to sit on the scholarship selection committee, but will be responsible for organizing the group.
Notification of Scholarship Awards
Letters will be sent to all applicants’ permanent address by May 12, 2009. Scholarship recipients are expected to mail a thank you letter to the Rushing family with a copy sent to Student Union & Activities by August 3, 2009 in order to be awarded the scholarship. All scholarship funds will be credited toward the Texas Tech student account to cover tuition and fees at the beginning of each semester. In the event that the student’s bills have already been paid, they will receive a refund check from the Financial Aid Office. Any scholarship recipient who chooses to leave their position or is removed from their position at any point before the semester is over, is responsible for reimbursing Student Union & Activities a percentage of the funds based upon the remaining amount of time left in that particular semester.
Scholarship Background
At the 1993 UC Programs Awards Banquet, Mr. and Mrs. W.B. Rushing donated $5,000 to UC Programs to be used for a scholarship endowment. It was the wish of the Rushing family that the interest income be used to provide a scholarship to a sophomore or junior member of UC Programs. The scholarship is intended to reward sophomore members of UC Programs who contribute time and talent to the organization and demonstrate increasing commitment as well as great potential. One scholarship will be awarded each year. It is anticipated that the first scholarship recipient will be chosen in the spring of 1994 with scholarship monies to be awarded in the fall of 1994. In 2005, UC Programs changed its name to the Tech Activities Board (TAB). The funds are directly credited to tuition charges. Recipients are announced at the Student Union & Activities Awards Banquet in April.
Application Deadline
Applications must be submitted to Student Union & Activities (Student Union 203) by 5:00pm on April 23, 2009. Questions about the scholarship should be directed to Zane Reif or Jana Vise at (806) 742-3636.
