Project 0-4396

Best Practices for Pavement Edge Maintenance

pavement edge dropoff

This research addressed the problem of pavement edge dropoffs as a maintenance, safety, and liability issue for TxDOT. With impact to TxDOT’s entire roadway system the edge maintenance issue warrants that “best practices” for pavement edge maintenance be defined and implemented. The primary benefit of this research has been a consolidation of over 3700 years of institutional knowledge regarding edge repair, and dissemination of those “best practices” across the State of Texas. One outcome of the research was a training curriculum for TxDOT employees. TechMRT researchers recommended that the training program be continued as an ongoing implementation project in order to communicate best practices for pavement edge maintenance to all appropriate audiences within TxDOT, maintenance and otherwise.
