PhD in Fine Arts (Theatre Arts Major) Course Work


The program requires 60 hours of coursework beyond the master’s degree distributed as follows:

Fine Arts Core Courses 15-18 hours*
Theatre Arts Courses 30-33 hours*
Dissertation (TH A 8000) 12 hours
Total: 60 hours

Fine Arts Core Courses - 15-18 hours

Theatre Arts students must take 5 of the following:

Art 5310 Historical/Critical Perspectives in the Visual Arts
Art 5314 The Visual Arts in Contemporary Context
Music 5310 Historical/Critical Perspectives in Music
Music 5314 Music in Contemporary Context
Philosophy 5310 History of Aesthetics
Philosophy 5314 Contemporary Aesthetics
*Student may take all 18 hours of the Fine Arts Core of may choose to complete 15 hours of the Core and 3 hours of an elective. The elective can be
1) a fifth course in one of the student's tracks, or
2) a course inside or outside the theatre area that contributes to the student's dissertation research.
Note: The elective must not cover any areas of research that are generally more properly studied while enrolled in 8000 courses.

Theatre Arts Courses - 30 hours

The student must take a total of thirty hours in the Department of Theatre and Dance, including two foundation courses: TH A 5350 (Seminar in Theatre Research Methods) and TH A 5306 (Theatre History Survey). The student must select two tracks and take a minimum of four courses (totaling 12 hours) in each track (totaling 24 track hours). Tracks are available in:

Arts Administration Playwriting
Design

The theatre curriculum is individualized to the needs and professional goals of each student. Each student’s degree plan is developed following the administration of the Diagnostic (Preliminary) Examination and in consultation with the Graduate Advisor and the Chair of the student’s Dissertation Committee.

PhD students in the Acting/Directing track are required to submit a good-faith proposal to direct in the Lab or Summer Theatre, and will direct if their proposal is accepted. This is meant as a one-time submission, which will probably be made during the residency year.

Emphasis in Playwriting - 12 hours:

TH A 5300 Dramatic Analysis
TH A 5301 Playwriting I (basic methods; write a one-act)
TH A 5302 Playwriting II (3:3:0) (writing the full-length play)
TH A 5321 Playwriting III (3:3:0) (selected topics)

  • In both the MFA and the PhD, during the first four semesters, the following courses must be taken in the order listed: THA 5300, THA 5301, THA 5302, THA 5321. Students entering mid-year (January) or in the summer will take other courses their first semester and begin the playwriting sequence in the fall.
  • May substitute THA 5307 or 5308 if play produced during Summer Rep.
