Core Purpose

To promote excellence in the practice and scholarship of theatre and dance.

Mission Statement

The Department of Theatre and Dance is dedicated to fostering its arts by mentoring and educating students while integrating practical training with academic studies, and by cultivating an audience.

Vision Statement

The Department of Theatre and Dance will exhibit and promote the highest standards of artistry, professionalism, diversity, and collaboration in arts training, education, and scholarship.

The Department of Theatre and Dance will:
  • Offer innovative theatre and dance programs that will attract excellent students, faculty, and staff;
  • Prepare students who are confident and competent, able to think critically and creatively, and who will become leaders in their profession
  • Be a cultural force in and for theatre and dance, locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally.

STRATEGIC PRIORITIES, GOALS, AND STRATEGIES

INVEST IN THE PEOPLE OF TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY

Access and Diversity: Recruit, retain, and graduate a larger, more academically prepared, and more diverse student body.

1.1 Recruit qualified and capable students with varied backgrounds and artistic interests.

Strategies
  • Recruit throughout the state, region, and nation.
  • Seek funding for talent-based and academic scholarships.
  • Seek increased funding for GA/TA/GPTI appointments.
1.2 Retain qualified and capable students.

Strategies
  • Enhance the quality of the academic experience through effective advising.
  • Seek continued financial support for qualified students.
  • Review annually the progress of students in the professional degree programs.
  • Participate fully in the “Graduate on Time” program.
1.3 Graduate students in a timely manner.
  • Review annually the progress of all students.
  • Identify the reasons for students who do not graduate in a timely manner.
Human Resources and Infrastructure: Use resources to recruit and retain quality faculty and staff and to support an optimal work environment.

2.1 Recruit, hire, and retain excellent and diverse faculty and staff.

Strategies
  • Revise departmental rankings for creative activity.
  • Define creative activity efforts as it relates to specific disciplines in our department.
  • Increase professional development opportunities and travel funding for faculty and staff.
  • Develop a plan to reduce faculty workload to university average.
  • Research salary equity issues of faculty and staff.
2.2 Pursue the construction and renovation of academic and performance space which meet or exceed NAST minimal standards.

Strategies
  • Along with the college, work to ensure new theatre and dance facilities are included in the university's Master Plan.
  • Develop "futures" plan(s) for departmental facilities, construction, and renovation.
  • Participate in the planning of any performing arts facilities on campus.
2.3 Increase the use of technology throughout the department.

Strategies
  • Implement a plan for updating or replacing faculty and staff computers.
  • Maintain and develop an effective and attractive website.
  • Investigate distance learning opportunities within the curriculum.

ENRICH THE EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE

Undergraduate Teaching and Learning: Provide effective and engaging instruction and production opportunities for undergraduates.

3.1 Improve teaching of undergraduate courses.

Strategies
  • Strengthen mentorship of GPTIs who are responsible for undergraduate instruction.
  • Develop and implement an undergraduate exit exam.
  • Conduct review of all undergraduate outcomes and assessments.
  • List clear outcomes and assessments on all course syllabi.
3.2 Provide wide and diverse production experiences for students.

Strategies
  • Present a full and diverse season of theatre and dance performances.
  • Provide design, directing, choreographing, performance, and stage management opportunities for qualified students.
  • Encourage production participation of incoming students.
  • Support the development and production of original scripts.
Graduate and Professional Education: Ensure effective and engaging instruction and diverse production opportunities.

4.1 Review graduate programs and curricula.

Strategies
  • Assess curricula for relevance to programs.
  • Publish Graduate Handbook on departmental website.
  • Work with the dean to increase the number of graduate faculty.
  • Examine departmental policies as they relate to graduate education.
  • Conduct review of all graduate outcomes and assessments.
4.2 Promote artistic and educational opportunities that bring regional and national prestige to the department.

Strategies
  • Promote and market Fine Arts Doctoral Program.
  • Collaborate with the college and university on guest artists and speakers.
  • Encourage artistic collaboration with other units within the university.
4.3 Provide a wide and diverse production experience for graduate students.

Strategies
  • Present a full and diverse season of theatre and dance performances.
  • Provide design, directing, choreographing, playwriting, performance, and arts administration opportunities for graduate students.
Engagement: Provide scholarly outreach opportunities that contribute to students' learning and that benefit our communities, the state, and nation.

5.1 Encourage graduate student participation at professional conferences.

Strategies
  • Provide funding for student travel.
  • Inform students of upcoming opportunities for professional development.
5.2 Explore graduate certificate programs.

Strategies
  • Add graduate certificate in dance and examine the feasibility of adding graduate certificate programs in other areas.

ADVANCE SCHOLARLY AND CREATIVE ENDEAVORS

Scholarly and Creative Productivity: Increase scholarly and creative productivity and funding for all areas of inquiry within the department.

6.1 Develop artistic opportunities outside the university.

Strategies
  • Provide opportunities for off-campus performances.
  • Participate in American College Theatre Festival and American College Dance Festival.
  • Continue participation in the Angel Fire Mountain Theatre.
  • Seek internal funds to support off-campus events.
6.2 Develop research opportunities that bring regional, national, and international prestige to the department.

Strategies
  • Support faculty development leave.
  • Support faculty participation in the Seville program.
  • Seek college funding to support faculty research opportunities.

STRENGTHEN PARTNERSHIPS

Partnerships: Build strategic partnerships and alliances that disseminate knowledge in the arts.

7.1 Promote collaboration with local and regional arts entities.

Strategies
  • Encourage faculty and students to serve on boards of off-campus arts groups.
  • Collaborate with other on-campus arts groups.
  • Serve as a local, regional, and national resource for the arts.
7.2 Engage community members in support and advocacy for theatre and dance.

Strategies
  • Work with the advisory board for the Department of Theatre and Dance.
  • Provide opportunities for school and civic groups to attend Theatre and Dance productions.
